Cypriot kippers

Postby devil » Sat Jul 16, 2005 12:35 pm

I learnt today that the word 'kipper' may have Cypriot connotations!

The etymology is
Old English cypera, used once with leax salmon (LAX noun1) = Old Saxon kupiro, connected with COPPER noun1 & adjective, from the colour of the male salmon.

As one theory gives copper being named after the island (rather than vice versa), then kippers must originally have been a delicacy herefrom!!!

Of course, there's another support for the hypothesis: many Cypriots like to kipper themselves with cigarette smoke

Let's hope that the connotations don't come from the other associations of the word kipper.

In souther English slang, kipper means the following:

Unreliable person
Coward
Vagina
