Cost of living in Cyprus

Postby Sotos » Tue Feb 02, 2010 11:42 am

Sometimes we get questions about cost of living and how much things cost in Cyprus. So I thought I will post this link now that I found it. It is made by CTO so it has to be quite accurate. It has everything from the cost of milk and bread to car rentals and taxi fares.

Such prices do not exist only in Cyprus. I can confirm that some products have the same prices in Hungary aswell when it to comes electronics.

Very useful and quite realistic. Unlike some of the cost of living lists displayed on the websites of those selling homes in the sun and travel agents too.

On one of the property websites this week they had stated that municipality charge is never more than 60 euro per year. It costs 120 where I live.

Of course it cannot be right for everywhere. In tourist areas you could pay a lot more for a bottle of milk from a kiosk for example. But people should expect that.

A question for locals/people working living and working in CY.

Does the 'average' salary earn you enough to get by. Pay bills, rent/mortgage/food etc?

I don't live in the N. Palio but I've visited it a lot over the years since the crossings opened.

At the moment, just back from Berlin at Xmas, I share my time between Larnaca and Peyia (and Poland, Egypt and the Caribbean and anywhere else I can skive off to!) I am very unlucky that I have to work part time but very lucky that I can do that work from anywhere on the globe that I can get a remote connection to my UK servers.

What is an 'average'salary? If you are talking about the Government calculated 'average' salary, then no. You do have to remember that there is a very big 'black' economy here which is not recorded anywhere and pushes the Government figures down.

Whether you can get by on what you earn depends too much on your lifestyle and is a very difficult question to answer.

I am glad to have been so helpful!

The same as the UK too. One person would find it tough especially with running a car. Two people on average wage should be ok, just
