Aparently it was Scotland Yard who said the loud noises were detonators...must be some truth in it because I doubt they would say that flipantly.

From BBC:

Dummy explosions using detonators only have sparked the evacuation of three Tube stations and the closure of three lines, a BBC correspondent has said.
Police cordoned off large areas around Warren Street, Oval and Shepherd's Bush Tube stations.

Emergency services also attended an incident on a route 26 bus in Hackney Road in Bethnal Green.

There were reports of smoke coming from two of the stations. There are no reports of any injuries.

The whole of the Northern Line has been suspended, along with the Victoria Line and the Hammersmith and City.

A spokesman for London Underground said the nature of the incidents was unknown.

One hospital, near Warren Street station, has started its emergency plan.

Sosiane Mohellavi, 35, was travelling from Oxford Circus to Walthamstow when she was evacuated from a train at Warren Street.

"I was in the carriage and we smelt smoke - it was like something was burning. "Everyone was panicked and people were screaming. We had to pull the alarm. I am still shaking."

But a BBC reporter outside Warren Street station said there was no sign of smoke outside.

Dummies or not, it's shut down half the tube network again... if they catch these people they should string them up by the nackers from London Bridge

Latest news is that the explosions were caused by detonators only. To be honest though, I'm surprised that this hasn't been treated as a major incident. We're all one day expecting an attack using either chemical or biological agents, which would likely be contained in a small package so the agents wouldn't be destroyed in the initial blast. I'm therefore surprised that it seems these stations weren't sealed off as soon as police arrived and the areas and people within them contained. Had it been some sort of biological agent, half of central London would now be a danger zone. Sounds dramatic, but it could easily have turned out this way.

A Turkish news site is saying that gun sounds can be heard, but seems unlikely since no other site or TV is giving it!!

"They are not treating it as a major incident yet" says BBC

But the tube won't go far today I'm afraid:

"The whole of the Northern Line has been suspended, along with the Victoria Line and the Hammersmith and City line.
A number of other stations were closed including Westminster tube station, Waterloo station and King's Cross Thameslink. There were also reports that St Paul's tube and Oxford Circus tube station were closed. "
