Overlook the political aspects:

Postby cymart » Mon Mar 01, 2010 9:01 pm

and it is possible to cross into the Greek-Cypriot area if you fly into Ercan,as long as you have an E.U. passport, the main disadvantage being the stop-over in Turkey due to Ercan not being recognised internationally by anyone except Turkey.( you can even ask them to stamp a white paper instead of your passport)
My wife runs a travel agency here and I can tell you that although we do not sell tickets for any flights from there,a number of people do use them to fly to Turkey from Cyprus, including some Greek-Cypriots!!When you can book direct to places like Antalya,Istanbul etc. for under 100 euros one way and the cost via Athens is more than double this is perhaps not so surprising!Anyone who does not believe me can see the Greek-Cypriot cars parked at Ercan airport, especially in summer.
Apart from all that,as a general rule and one which I have learned after travelling worldwide for over 30 years to all kinds of places,do not mix politics with your travel arrangments, especially if you are a foreigner... you have nothing to gain and can get into a lot of hassle.

So am I breaking the law if I fly to the Ercan. Travel to the Larnaca.
Stay few days in Larnaca. Then go back to the Ercan and fly back home?

My understanding was that it is not illegal for EU citizen to fly to the Ercan and then go to the Larnaca, if you first have a stop-over in Turkey.

Yes, It was much cheaper for me to fly to the Ercan and I had no idea about this problem.
I knew that there is a political issues, but I did not know that this would be such a big problem.
I could cancel my flights, but I would not get my money back
:(
I do not want to piss of anyone. I just want to see the Larnaca.

What should I do?

It may prove to be more expensive in the long run!

Do not let people scare you about this trip, myself and my family have crossed over the border in both directions with our EU passports and we have not had any problems at all.

When you get to Istanbul, before passport control, you will have to go to the visa desk and pay for a visa (I think this is £15-£20) in order to stay over. When you get to Ercan you will have to get to Nicosia where you can walk over the border. From Nicosia you can get a bus to Larnaca during the day, but I do not think the buses run at night.

Goof luck with your trip.

It's illegal!

Now you know ... so no excuses.

You sound like a morally rightful person. Do not let this one trip ruin your ethics and principles, for life!

Go back and demand your money or alternative tickets, because the travel agent was wrong to sell these tickets and pretty soon the RoC may seek justice and you may find your name on a list.

Good luck, you did the right thing to seek advice on this matter! :D

If the ROC was keeping lists for later justice why would they agree to border crossing and I know for a fact that the Greek authorities never stop you to ask for names or any other details.

Oracle have you ever crossed the border ?

I am sorry if I have made someone mad.

Postby SAMSAMSAM » Mon Mar 01, 2010 9:51 pm

I am sorry if I have made someone mad. I did not try to disrispect anyone by choosing to fly to the Ercan.

I would only like to know if I am breaking the law or not and how to get to Larnaca.

thank you,
