I hate to say this, but...

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Larnacaman, stop making a fool of yourself!

Cyprus’ tourist arrivals have remained steady for the last 10 odd years between 2.1m and 2.5m p/a.

Tourist Arrivals in Cyprus:

2003…2,303,200
2004…2,349,000
2005…2,470,100
2006....2,400,924
2007....2,416,081
2008....2,403,750
2009... 2,141,193

Here's a more detailed table for the most recent years...

Year........Arrivals.......Revenue......Spend p/person
---------------------------------------------------------------------
2006........2,400,924......1,755.3......€731
2007........2,416,081......1,858.1......€769
2008........2,403,750......1,792.8......€745
2009……2,141,193…...1.493.2.…..€697

Revenue from Tourism, Dec 2009

NB: Income from tourism is around 7% or 8% of Cyprus’ 25b p/a.

Tourism is an industry that’s being phased out in Cyprus because every year other industries are surpassing it in revenue.

Pretty much the same number of tourists will continue coming to Cyprus but the revenue generated from them is getting less and less significant.

I predict that within a decade not a single Euro will be spent by the government advertising Cyprus holidays! The days of selling chips and beer are pretty much over…

So if Tourism is 12% what is the rest then?

Get Real,

Do you honestly believe all this crap your posting here??? Jeez, every man and his dog that has been here over the last 10 years can tell you, that these figures and what they have seen with there own eyes just don't tally or have been doctored ....What's it called , Oh yes,....Creative Accounting!! Or just plain Lie's that the Mushroom's will believe... Very much like what Greece did to fool the EU into letting them into the Euro Currency!!
Now, ....Look where that has landed them for all their lies

Don't take my word for it, go ask those families and businesses that totally rely on the tourist summer seasons, and see what they have to say about your posted figures!!!!
Go ask the previous owners of tourist based shops and businesses, ...why they have sold up previously thriving profitable businesses, mostly at a loss...
Go ask the previous owners of the hotels that have closed, or have been knocked down because of the dwindling number of ''Expected tourists'' Bloody hell i can name at least 5 here in Larnaca alone.

Your living in cloud cuckoo land my friend. Tourists have been declining year on year, and if you had your eyes open you would have seen it for yourself. At one time you couldn't get a sunbed on the main Larnaca beach for love nor money after a certain time every morning in the season. Now at least a third or more of them are empty, no matter what time of the day.... I bet those from other areas have seen exactly the same thing at their beaches too...

Again, your only looking at the holiday tourist, and what they spend, There are whole sub-sectors that rely on all sorts of tourists, and many of your local industries also rely on your tourist industry. Just stop for a few minutes and think about it, OK, here's just a few, to get you to start thinking outside of your closed box. .... your brewery businesses, your soft drink businesses, confectionery businesses, Car sales (rental markets) ALL these industries rely on the summer tourist season to increase Gross annual turnovers making them profitable. So ..... think on, and you will suddenly see other industries, that are equally dependant on the tourist buck. Tunnel vision just doesn't work in today's Real World, Go down that route and they'll be nothing but bad surprises for you all.....

What industries are you talking about, that are surpassing the tourist industry on the Island??? Are they sustainable?? Are they exportable, Are they going to support the Ex tourist industries, out of work, workers??
Food for thought for you, and a good many others here....

I've been around in this world a lot longer than you, One thing I've learned, Never take government surveys/ reports as the gospel truth, they are produced for there benefit, to cover there arses ......Remember they want to remain in power... They want people like you to vote them in again....

Me making a fool of myself??? ....I think NOT!!!

You must not get too upset about our GR. He probably forgot to take his medication again. Somebody just call the nurse will you.

He has all sorts of other crazy ideas on how he is going to defeat Turkey with his 15 strong volunteers. The problem is when one is delusional it is not sector specific. But it must be easier to cope with problems, if one denies that they exist at all. And of course he has his gang to help him with that.

Just humour him and he will be ok.

Tourism dollars should not be underestimated for small countries. In Gibraltar, tourism is becoming more and more important each year now that the UK's military accounts for less and less (it's now around 7%; it was over 60% twenty-five years ago) of the annual budget. For Cyprus - just like other countries that need tourist money - any adverse news will have an impact. Not what one needs in this time of economic troubles...

Larnacaman, take Y-Fronts by the hand and go back to the coffee shop where you came from because nobody is interested in your daft opinion, just credible evidence.

Hahaha!!!!, ..... And i suppose your evidence ''IS'' right?? Just that you can't justify the figures, just like the Government that published them....

Running away, burying your head in the sand, or just complete denial will get you no-where in this life...

rastan wrote:After previously asking on this forum about the possibility of my family having a holiday in Cyprus, one week in the south & one week in the north (I'm English & have no bias towards greek or turkish cypriots), I have decided to spend 2 weeks in the TRNC, several greek cypriots were so rude towards me & also the turkish cypriots were standing up for me....so I must say that I will spend my holiday pounds in the TRNC. Take note greek cypriots, your economy is not good, you need every tourist pound that you can get, if you start to behave like your turkish cypriot brothers & sisters then you may attract tourists like me!

I bet this dude simply can't afford a holiday in southern cyprus!

People are entitled to their own opinions, but they are not entitled to their "own" facts!

Facts are universally useful for everyone but opinions are personal and have limited use.

Don't mix up the two!

And be self-aware that your biased empirical observations are second rate compared to scientifically gathered information -- Arrogance? Perfectly demonstrated by "larnacaman" aka "rastan"

Lesson in life over ...
