Well if Britain is terrorising the north of Ireland...what do you expect the Irish to do in their struggle?

Let me clear up something. I'm no great fan of Britain. However, I would like for you to explain to me how the hell the Brits are terrorising Northern Ireland. Are they killing innocent women and children? Are they bombing your local stores? Are they arbitrarily locking up your youth? Which one?

My Friend:

The territorial issues between GB and Ireland go back centuries. YOU WILL NOT SOLVE THESE ISSUES THROUGH VIOLENCE!!!! Even the IRA realised this. The only thing that you will generate with violence is attention. After a while this attention will wane and you will have nothing.

If there are grievances between people we MUST let all avenues of political discussions exhaust themselves before we pick up the sword. If not then we are no different then those who unjustly kill people in the name of God.

No, there are deep running divisions, just look at a god damn map ffs. N. Ireland should be united, its natural. Also, your country (america) = biggest terrorist state on the planet in history!

Hi Kypros

I have spent (a little) time both North and South of the border; to say the British are terrorising the north of Ireland is a ludicrous statement. The majority of people in Northern Island wish to remain British - it is not an unwilling colony.

Without a British presence over the last 50 years, Ireland would have become a bloodbath.

So we British are to blame yet again, funny how 25 million Irish Americans can reap carnage upon the Local indiginous(sorry about spelling) of The USA and then complain about the old world problems.

Map's

Postby dancingbear » Sat Aug 06, 2005 10:02 am

Kypros,
Ok lets look at map's. scotland and Wales part of an English Island? Cyprus 43 miles from Turkey 500 miles from Greece. Look around you get on with life and how far back in history do you want to go, just a thought should we be kicking out millions of english from England because of 1066 and Vikings and Romans and yes Iraq's who were in England as part of the Roman Empire.

I agree with you in a way, the above poster shouldn't use geographical situations to justify his own views. But my own feelings on the matter are this, that Britain is in danger of lapsing into some really nasty racist mentalities, particularly in regards to Immigration, which are usually so ridiculously unfounded they don't even merit debate. But I'll do it anyway, for example, according to Tresury Reports for the Fiscal Year 2004, Immigration over the preivous 5 years contributed towards 0.3% of economic growth, The Cost-Benefit Analysis of Immigration was over +$2 Billion (Revenue from Taxation as opposed to immediate problems of housing and maintaining et al), and 98.2% of Immigrats according to the ILO have jobs, which remarkably enough is above the British Average. What also incenses me is that when people talk of 'Immigrants' they also mean people like my family, inparticular my father who came over here with nothing and built a Business from scratch - And spoke fluent English to boot, as opposed to English people who buy properties in Cyprus, and don't even bother to learn Greek.

The concept of 'Integration' also incenses me. If 'Integration' means paying your taxes, being a generally respectable member of society and respecting the rule of law (within your own political beliefs), then yes, I would agree with it. But I get the feeling Mr. Clarke and Co. want everyone to sort of 'become' English.

Now, I've strayed off topic entirely on this thread. My own personal opinion is that this is another example of post-colonial British divide and rule at work, and the mere fact Mr. Gordon Brown is urging Brits to 'be proud of [their] colonial past' annoys me greatly.
