Car Ferry To Restart

Postby bill cobbett » Thu Jun 10, 2010 1:39 pm

Well this may be excellent news, looks like a Lim to mainland Europe drive on/drive off car ferry service that has been suspended for many years may be re-starting later this year... albeit with very limited capacity and docking at Lavrion (where on earth is that?) in Gr.

More at the CYMail.....

Lavrion? Jeezus christ... are they nuts? that a service dock next to makronissos... and only 12 ppl will have sleep capacity. Why not go straight to pirea... i was hoping it would take us to Rhodes atleast, then u have a great choice of ferries from there. Anyway, i am definetly off to greece with my windsurfing van

New Ferry Service

Postby zacharius » Fri Jul 30, 2010 2:15 pm

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone had heard anymore about this new service ?? They said in the article it would be towards the end of the Summer but can't find any new info on it anywhere.

Thanks

Ray it must be years since you were last at Lavrion. It is the port that zerves the Kyklades with frequent daily services to several islands.

The negative is that Lavrion does not have the capacity for the large Superfast type of ferries, which is what should have been put in the Cyprus line.

Be patient. It only took them 12 years to realise the strategic and practical importance to having an alternative to fllying. IT will take many months for them to figure out the ferry link.

In the Greek press they said that the first step would be to allow the RoRo ships to accept passengers with no cars. Spartan conditions, in ships not made for passengers (steep ladders instead of stairs etc) is the norm on these ships, I know cause I used them.

Sounds Cool Ray. One of my most enjoyable holidays was a Campervan Surfing Safari. Some of these things are better then your average 4 Star Hotel. Install a jacuzzi!
