Turkey signs key EU protocol

Benefits and problems from the EU membership.

Postby hincyprus » Sun Jul 31, 2005 11:09 pm

Sorry I got in wrong with my post in General Chat........

Now I understand what has been signed :?

my original understanding of the EU's position was that it would not begin accession negotiations with Turkey without Turkey recognising the ROC.

Are we about to see big brother EU agreeing to Turkey joining the Eu for the simple reason that it is a country of 60+ million people but Cyprrus has only 600,000 plus whatever number is in the North?

I can just imagine Brussels counting the money that Turkey will be pouring into the coffers....

God I am getting cynical in my old age....

Your understanding was wrong (no dis respect intended btw). The requirment that was put on Turkey was to sign the protocol - not recognise the RoC. This was all thrashed out at the EU summit of heads of states months earlier. Turkey has now met the requirments placed on her by the EU for the start of accession process to begin.

Accession talks with Turkey will take 10 to 15 years. The EU (those forces that want Turkish accession to sucseed) will work on Turkish accession and the solving of the Cyprus problem in tandem.

looks like the turkish parties were divided on erdogans decision to sign the protocol.

also interesting is the articles mention of
last-minute diplomacy involving Ankara, London and the European Commission.
Good to see London is still bending over for Washington.
