Turkish Cypriot Direct Trade with EU “to be imposed”

The Cyprus Mail is quoting international relations expert, Hubert Faustmann, as saying that Direct Trade with EU for Turkish Cypriots will be imposed on Cyprus by the end of the year. In exchange Greek Cypriots will getting the Ankara Protocol which means it will then have flights and trade with Turkey.

The reason for this, it appears, is President Christofias’ unwillingness to set a timescale for the talks which has given the impression that he does not want a settlement. This attitude reinforces the belief that the south wants to keep Turkish Cypriots out in the cold as a punishment for 1974. Unfortunately for Greek Cypriots this has alienated them from the international community which would like to see a line drawn underneath the Cyprus Problem and for the country to move on.

The Jennifer Lopez witch-hunt hasn’t helped much either. It too reinforces the image of a baying crowd seeking revenge. When people step back and look at what has happened they will see the petty mindedness of a group of people who profess to want a unified Cyprus. They will see that such a thing is not possible because too many people seem to harbour a grudge. Separate states then seems the only sensible way for Cyprus to go in order to avoid the return of the bloodshed of the past.

I cannot find WHERE the Cyprus Mail is quoting this? I see you are in there Miltiades - have you seen anything about this in the CM?

Is that as illegal as your unconstitutional destruction of OUR constitution?

If you want to change the rules of the game, you have to play according to the new rules. Remember GCs broke the original rules.

Oh dear, back to old historical blame game!

This report may not be accurate, but Downer has to report back to the UN by November 2010. Surely it is right for the UN to make a judgement on whether a settlement is possible? Just saying 'you started it in 1963' or 'you started it in 1974' will get us nowhere. Remember UNIFCYP came in 1964 for a six month period, most of the island has probably been born since then!

The strategy of the 'long struggle' has ended in a political cul-de-sac. Decision time is coming, its either a bi-zonal bi-communal federation, as envisaged in the hihg-level agreement or its permanent partition. The UN and the EU will not tolerate the 'non-solution solution' promoted by Dentash and Papadopoulos for years.

All the legalistic arguments and UN resolutions in the world mean nothing if they can't be implemented. The EU and the UN have agreed that they will accept a solution agreed by Cypriots. They don't want to impose direct trade, but if agreement is not reached that will probably happen.

If they can impose direct trade why can't they impose the removal of Turkish troops and right of return of refugees?

The whole island, or just the area controlled by Turkey's military? By the way, the article is garbage. But I'd like to know what the silly woman in the photo is doing.
