Degenerate forum

I cannot but remark that a minorty of contributors take every opportunity to slang each other, often with unacceptable language for a forum that is accessible to everyone including children. Worse, their arguments are often childish in the extreme and make entirely false assumptions. Ad hominem attacks should also be stopped immediately.

I'm beginning to consider this inappropriate behaviour is irksome.

May I appeal to the moderators and admin to be tougher and close all threads that show signs of getting out of hand, to admonish those that cause it so and suspend them on repetitive cases and banning them altogether if they take no warning.

Contributors to this forum should remember that this also is a showcase for Cyprus to the world. What are people going to think of Cyprus if they read some of the recent threads? Will some of them not say, "If this is how Cyprus really is, I don't think it's a place for me come on holiday to spend my hard-earned money". You are all perhaps really harming the economy, as well as the reputation, of the island.

Enough of negativism! Positively, I suggest that this forum be completely revamped, total deletion of existing threads. Reduce the number of sub-forum titles. Have a zero-tolerance on posts containing racism, religious intolerance, bitterness regarding the current or past situation, ad hominem attacks, allusions to nationalism, all politics etc. Show Cyprus up in a positive light to make it attractive to those whom we would like to welcome here.

This disintegration of harmony is relatively recent. We all know who are the instigators. Let them be on their guard!

I agree with you on what you said there devil, I was thinking of opening a topic like that this morning. I do nnot however support strict moderation as this attracts people to break rules! What we should do is to increase the number of moderators but moderate the forum mildly. The moderators should be enough to have 1 online when others are offline. The admin should also come online for 30 mins twice a day to check how it is going. This is my proposal what do you say??

Sorry, recent experience has shown that forceful moderation is necessary to keep adolescent-minded hot-heads in order. Rules are rules and if anyone cannot keep to them, then they have to take the consequences.

If a man rapes a woman, he goes to clink, no arguments. If a stupid kid here rapes a thread by changing the topic into something unacceptable, he should also take the consequences of his acts. This will continue until positive action stops it.

Devil, as much as I agree with your sentiments and suggestions, we're stuck between a rock and a hard place. I recently took action to prevent the disintegration of threads in my alloted section of the forum (Cyprus-EU). As a result of deleting posts that were totally off-topic, I had a number of members conduct a witchhunt against me, calling me an autocrat and complaining constantly to me via PM and to the admin. I'm personally as fed up as you about the drift of threads, but when it comes to the General Chat section, it's less of an issue as many of them are founded in ambiguity. When it comes to more serious topics, I agree with you 100%. I also miss the days when this place was full of light banter and laughter. With the infiltration of some recent members and the character changes displayed by others, it's no longer that place.

Lana and i moderate this forum and we try not to be heavy handed but we do draw the line on personal attacks, hatred, etc. but what we ask is if you notice someone breaking the rules could you please send us a PM with the relevant link to the discretion and we will take action.

We will not accept that the few will make a very pleasant forum into their personal hate playground and if fellow forum members support us then this will not happen

devil - I wholeheartedly agree with you, what a sad reflection to the world. If an outsider, so to speak, read some of the input on these pages they would be forgiven for thinking that Cyprus is not worth spending any more time or effort on.
The sad part is that, in my circles, life on the Island is nothing like portrayed in some of these threads. I find it fine and amenable amongst different nationalities. To say it was friendly would be an understatement.
I return home tomorrow for a while and will only have periodic access to a pc (thank god) but I sincerely hope that the bickering gives way to constructive help & input as I know a lot of people ask questions on here that they genuinely wish an answer to & it can only reflect on us as an accommodating people if we do our best to help them.
As a final thought please be so kind as to pass on my thanks to the moderators of late who in my personal opinion do a grand if thankless job. There are those of us who truly do appreciate their efforts
Best regards

How about opening a chat room so that anyone who wants to go off the thread can go and express their views there.

I completely agree with devil, apart from one point. I do not think its a good idea to delete all existing threads.
Especially in the general section, when it comes to moving to Cyprus or going on holiday, there has been so much knowledge and advise been collected that it would be a shame to delete all this....

OK, I'll go along with you as far as keeping threads that may be useful, but I say delete all those that are polemical in any way.
