Has Cyprus currently got an acute water shortage?

Postby hincyprus » Fri Aug 12, 2005 2:01 pm

Hi,

We are currently suffering days of water pressure reductions and water cut offs.

I know that the major hotels in my area are not affected but the local Muktar/President of the village seems to have targeted residents instead.

We are always aware of the delicate water balance and I currently pump water for plants from a special garden tank fed from my septic overflow and filtered through 20 metres of rock prior to entry to the tank. We also collect shower and washing up water for garden use.

We do not take baths. (only showers)

Is anyone else aware of similar problems on the island.

dont worry about it. if the hotels could not provide water for customers then tourism would stop, crippling the econmy.

The island generally is not in crisis, as it was around 1999, but local cuts may occur. Unfortunately, much of Cyprus' water pipes in towns and villages are in deplorable condition and leaks are frequent. This means quarters are cut off while patches are applied, only for the same pipe to leak 100 m along the road a week or a month later.

Because hotels are large consumers, ad hoc pipework is often installed for them, giving a more reliable service.

It would require only two more winters like the last one (which had average rainfall) to force general rationing because the desalination programme was stopped the first year we had a decent winter rainfall and the powers-that-be deemed that it was no longer necessary. How short-sighted can you get.

Please see http://www.protonique.com/cyprus_water/ to investigate this subject in more detail. I have a forum for water in cyprus at http://www.bnellis.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=9

Hi H, this has always been the case as far as my experience goes.
They cut the water supply for the locals in order to have enough water for the tourists (e.g. hotels). We used to have no water on every second day.
But actually it was quite easy to handle this. On the days with supply the tank on the roof was filled and that was enough for the following day. Just don't use the washing machine on days without supply. :-)

I am well aware of some of the reasons for cut offs etc, as I have lived on the island on and off since 1990.

However, I cannot find any other area at this time suffering these problems.

The mayor has even seen fit to ban gardening watering and pool filling....and yet the centre village houses have full and very high pressure virtually constantly.

Of course we should all conserve water as best we can.

As I said previously, we collect washing up water to use on the garden, (we do not use the dish washer at present) when we shower we have a collector in the base to catch as much as we can, and I use my septic overflow for plants. When we shower we soap without the water running then wash off. We are doing our bit I think.

It just seems strange that we are the only area suffering......I think.

we are close to the Hawaii Grand/Elias Beach hotels.

H

Thus the question which I suppose those outside the island will not be able to answer.
