Visiting Cyprus for the first time

Postby bagold » Wed Aug 17, 2005 9:16 am

I am new to this forum to please be gentle with me :)

First my background. I am from London, born and brought up here though with parents of Pakistani origin. I grew up in North London amongst a large group of Cypriots. Many of my friends at school were Cypriots from both sides.

Now I am finally realising my dream of visiting Cyprus. I will be travelling with my wife and three children.

We will be staying in a place called Lapta near Kyrenia. We will be there for a week.

My first question is would we be able to cross the green line into south part of Nicosia? Can we also cross from Famagusta? Are there any problems if we get a TRNC stamp in our passports?

I would appreciate any guidance. We are all UK passport holders (though my wife is also a Pakistani citizen).

Yes, you can pass if you hold any EU passport. Yes you can pass from famagusata. I am not sure about the last one. Tell them not to put stamp maybe.

Hi bagold

There may be a problem coming into the Republic of Cyprus; you will be deemed to have entered via an illegal point of entry (Ercan?).

Yes its Ercan airport. Someone mentioned that the situation may have changed since the referendum but I am not sure.

If I do get to South Nicosia any particular places to visit? Personally I am quite into historical places. My daughter is more into shopping though.

Hi bargold

I am not sure the Referendum brought any great 'bringing together'; my advice would be to approach the Cyprus High Commission for information. IF they do allow you into the RoC do not bring in any goods bought in the north, they will be confiscated and you will be fined.

I did call the Cyprus High Commission in London and they told me that a TRNC stamp on my passport will not cause any problems now. Thanks for all the advice.

Now if I have a day to spend in Nicosia (Lefkosa?) which places would you recommend? Personally I am into places of historical/political significance. My aim is to try and find out about a place, what makes the people tick, its history, etc. My wife and daughter may prefer a spot of shopping.
