How much do money you need to live in Cyprus?

Postby Guernseygal » Wed Aug 17, 2005 9:34 pm

Hi Everyone
We're thinking of moving to Cyprus and would have an income of about UK Pounds 1,000 per month after we have purchased a property with no mortgage.
Our family suitation is that we have a 3 year girl so want to do fun family type things.
According to the websites (which are trying to sell us property!) we should be able to live quiet well on this amount but I'd appreciate the comments of people living in Cyprus as to just how far this amount would really go.
Thanks to anyone giving their comments re this.

Hi Jerseygirl

You will get by on UK£12,000 pa. I assume as you are quoting Sterling, this income would be from the UK. Will you or your Partner not wish to work here to supplement your income? If you are retiring at 30 ish, you will find yourself very bored here, I suspect.

Whatever, this figure will get you by, providing that you do not want your daughter to go to an English school; what about a car? If you need to run two cars: to fit in with the school run for one of you and working for the other, this will strech the budget.

1000 UK pounds is around 840 CY pounds. Thats enough to live an OK life, but not enough to do any savings or have any kind of luxaries.

According to the websites (which are trying to sell us property!) we should be able to live quiet well on this amount

What they care about is to make a sale

If you manage to supplement your income with another 200-300 CY pounds you should be fine though.

if you dont send your daughter to a private school, you dont have a loan to pay everymonth then its ok.
even if you do have to buy a car,a small nice car is not that expensive and you will be able to repay it in a couple of years. of course if you do have one then you will live quite nice in cyprus with 1000sterling

i cant remember which thread it is on but if you look through topics over the last couple of months you will find a breakdown of costs which are based on my actual monthly spend here on the island.

On another point as another post says...at your age you will be bored to death after the first year.........

I am moving to cyprus in october. The average wage is about £cy150 a week.

Providing you manage your overheads then you may be ok.

I dont have any kids in tow so there's a big saving.

We are taking enough money for a 6 month stay. If we are successful then we'll make it permanant... if not, we'll come home.

Always have an escape route just in case....

Hi Pat

Liked your website!

One thing you did say was 'always keep an escpae route open'; while I see the sense in that, what I have observed is that a far higher propertion of those who retain a home in their native country, fail to settle here.
Psychologically they have not 100% committed to the move.
