Spidernet = BAD CHOICE!

Postby andytandreou » Fri Aug 26, 2005 11:44 am

Hi all.

I would like to spread the message that Internet service provider Spidernet is by far the worst on the entire planet earth.
I've been an Internet user in Cyprus for many years, back when connections to the internet where 28k per second. I have tried many ADSL providers and trust me, there are HUGE differences between them. There are differences in connection settings, proxies, price and quality of service, don't be fooled into thinking that all ISPs are the same simply because Cyta owns the lines.

I was not surprised to hear recently that Spidernet has made a loss for a second year running and they appear helpless to stop the tide of people leaving for BETTER and more proffessional companies like Netway and OTENET.

Spidernet uses some ridiculus technology (older than the Net itself) called proxy servers which are totally useless and cause more problems than pooring a cup of coffee in your pc. I won't go into too much detail but expect a lot of errors and FORGET pc gaming (if you're into that)!

Please don't get Spidernet EVER, you have been warned.

I highly recomend OTEnet for price and NETWAY for amazing quality service.

We use spidernet at work. It is not that bad. Proxies can be a pain in the ass some times but web browsing is fine with Spidernet. Maybe you are so negative because Spidernet is not very good with online gaming?

You might be right, as online gaming with Spidernet is useless due to constant disconnecting.
The bottom line is that for ANY advanced user of the Internet Spidernet is by far the worst option. I won't go into what "advanced" user might be but bare in mind that you may be advanced in IRC, MSN and other chat programs while other users might be more advanced in downloading music and p2p software. In both cases Spidernet will let you down greatly.

If all you do is read your email and do some browsing then it can be said that a 56K connection will serve you well. But users of ADSL should be considered advanced from the start, otherwise they wouldn't require a 24/7, fast connection to the Internet.

Cyta's ADSL Netrunner Service is totally pants... It's probably only a little bit better than spidernet at the moment but overall it's restricted in everything and offers terrible download speeds and poor connections. I offen wonder why people stay with Netrunner since there are so many other services available but i suppose the move from 56k to ADSL is so amazing that people just think: "this is as good as it gets" and never enquire for better/cheaper ISPs.

OTEnet is trying to make a name for itself and offers AMAZING deals with the best quality connections and unrestricted speed. I personally wouldn't go with OTE as I've heard that they lack in online gaming which is probably the most demanding internet application available today.

Bottom line: If you play games like Everquest, Counter Strike and Unreal Tournament then you need Netway. Otherwise you can pay less and get an amazing deal with OTE, something like £90 for a year for ADSL 1000 and 30% off calls with your existing Cyta line.

Hi Andy.

At the moment, I am with Netrunner, not through choice but with what Cyta / IChoice have given me. You are correct about the download speed which is a real pain in the backside, especially when backing up websites which at the moment, including databases, we are talking about 500Megs which I am estimating will double within the next year or so.

Would I contact Cyta to change, or do I have contact anyone else?

Thanks for the heads up :)

I have experience with all ISPs in Cyprus. At work we have connections with cytanet, spidernet and otenet. At home in the past I used cytanet, spidernet and now I am using Netway.

Form my experience Cytanet is OK for web browsing and regular communications software, but when it comes to p2p, ftp etc it sucks. They have limits on several ports and applications.

Spidernet is OK for the web, but as it was mentioned already the proxies can cause problems with several applications.

OteNet is fine, but I didn't try it with p2p and such.

Netway is what I am using now. They are they most expensive but they are the best overall in my opinion.

Would I contact Cyta to change, or do I have contact anyone else?

You can call Cytanet to cancel your account with Netrunner. You will be charged only for the days of the month you used. But before you cancel with Netrunner get your new connection. With Netway is very easy. Just go to their website (http://www.netway.com.cy) and you can subscribe online. Your account will be active within minutes.

I would stay away from spidernet. Netway is your best bet.

What do you mean by "real IP address"? If you want a static IP then no basic package of any ISP offers that. You will have to get a more expensive package.

The "All ports open" requirement eliminates cytanet and the "no proxies" eliminates spidernet. I would suggest to try with Otenet and Netway.
