A common story...

A common story...

Postby SKI-preo » Tue Jun 21, 2011 3:48 am

My dad's mother died when he was a kid so my grandad remarried. I've now discovered that my father's step mum was tricked to transfering my late grandfather's entire estate to distant relatives of hers as my dad's step mum was illiterate.Dad's step mum did not have any of her own kids. The thieves are now on facebook posing in front of a new Audi.

I've mentioned this to a number of Cypriots living in Australia and similar things have happened to them. The attitude to Cypriots living abroad is that they have enough cash so they are not entitled to inheriting anything in Cyprus.I've heard from my wife's family that it is common practice for relatives who have remained in Cyprus to "steal" the inheritance of those abroad using shonky Powers of Attorney(plirexousia).

Ski,

something not quite right here mate.

When your G.F.Passed, his estate would have been divided (under Cypriot law), between his kids and your Step G.Mother. The wife does not automatically get everything, as in Cyprus you cannot dis-inherit your kids.

So, what happened there. You may have grounds to take legal action. If your late G.F. died prior to 1989, then your Step G.M was only entitled to 1/6 share.

These practices do happen as they seem to think that the Cyps living abroad are too stupid to know or do anything about it.

You could investigate the matter further if you wished, good luck.

Whose property was it initially? Your grandfather's or your step-grandmother's? Also are you sure that she was tricked? That woman is not your blood relative and maybe she voluntarily decided to leave her property to the people who cared for her in her final years.

Sot0s, he does state, "his grandfathers entire estate", which would suggest it was his otherwise it wouldn't be his entire estate.

Also, you have assumed that her 'relatives' took care of her.

Lets hear more from SKI first.

I was just saying that there might be another side in such stories. Ski said that such things happen because people in Cyprus believe that Cypriots living abroad have enough cash. But I suspect the main reason for this "common story" is that some old people leave their properties to those that are near them and help them in their final years. Those who live abroad can not really help their old relatives in Cyprus.
