Things are a lot lot better; I can remember a bomb going off when I was walking around Colombo a couple of years back. But the Tamils still feel that many war crimes have gone unpunished - and that they are still treated as second class citizens. The President and his brothers still operate a regime of supression - against opponents, political activists and journalists. So democracy is still a victim there.

However, the counrty is pulling itself up from the deprivation of poverty brought about by 30 years of civil war and the tsunami; the big increase in the price of rice worldwide hits poor families hard, as it is the staple diet three meals a day.
(All meals are eaten with fingers, they had to find me a knife and fork after my first attempt at eating curry using my hands lol!)

Still, a beautiful country and populated by people with constant smiles.

I wish you a nice journey . I have a friend from Sri Lanka he lives in england after he studies and has sent me many cards so I know about the place . I havenever been there. I saw photos with big mountains and green hills everywhere and lots of water and of course the elephants as we saw on the above photos.

He told me about the civil war that has been going on fro decades since their independence from britain in the 1940s . And that now that the war is over there is a great potential for developemnt . But maybe the government needs to do more to reconstruct the place and make it a place for more investemnt and eliminate the gap between the poor and the rich .

Sali :Very beautiful photos .

First of all i would like to give my big thanks to you because you are a Moderator of this site. This topic was very helpful to me change my decision come to Cyprus.Your valuable ideas was help me to get that decision otherwise i would be in big trouble. I really thanks all members who reply this topic and also site Admin who control this wonderful site.

After ending war things are getting better and better every day.People live with happily and peacefully.Europeans and Americans talks about war crimes in sri lanka what a joke that is :D so we have to first look up Iraq Afghanistan and Libya . No war crimes here we abolished terrorism from sri lanka we are the only country could do so even USA and rest world still suffering from terrorism ok just forget it.

in near future this wonderful island will be one of Asia's best country .

I like his ending sentence "beautiful country and populated by people with constant smiles" yes of course that is 100% true.

Example for smiling and entertaining sri lankan people

Wait .. did you say 58 hours per week???? You call that "part time"? What is full time then? Who is giving you this info??

They told me including weekends 58 hours :D that information given me by local agent of that college. Anyway thanks for your valuable reply. After considering reply form here i have change my decision.it is better to stay sri lanka than come Cyprus.

When you say "local agent" you mean somebody in Sri Lanka? Was this agent Cypriot? Are you certain that he was working for the college? If you have any hard evidence about this then post them here. Some of the colleges create problems by bringing people to Cyprus who are not qualified or who do not have the means to pay for college and living expenses and who end up working illegally instead of studying.
