WAGES IN CYPRUS

Postby Angel Eyes » Fri Sep 02, 2005 12:45 pm

Hi Everyone :) I've been living in Cyprus from coming up to 2year's now, after moving from the UK. After doing various bar work I have now landed an office job. What I would like to know is, what is the legal Minimum wage, per month, and per hour???? Any feedback on this would be much appreciated, Thank you

Hi Angel Eyes

The minimum monthly wage is £365, I believe. There are sometimes hidden benefits (13th month salary, the employer paying the employes' SI contribution etc.)

Basically, I said that anyone wanting definitive information about minimum wage should consult the Deaprtment of Labour and Social Insurance. I cannot find the answer on their website.

Also, that being paid 'off the record' will mean that a person will lose social benefits in terms of sick, holiday and unemployment pay as well as a State old age pension.

Do you know if there are any penalties for companies employing people 'off the record'?

Hi Sotos

Yes, it is illegal, they are basicaly denying the State a financial contribution and at the end of the day someone -apart from me!!! - has to pay for State healthcare/social payments. At times I think I am the only one paying for it!

Employees have to make a number of payments - I dont have the papersw ith me right now (wel it is Saturday Night!) but in addition to the 6.3% SI Employre contribution, there is a Human Resouice contribution and two others, I think. If anyone is interested I will publish the info on Monday.

The employee's SI contribution is 6.3% on earnings up to £23,000pa

Thanks Svetlana. Do you know if foreign (non-EU) students can work legally in Cyprus?

Thank's everyone for your feedback, it has been very helpfull :D My situation is that after working a "Trial Period" for 2 month's I got told if I was getting kept on I would get a pay rise and be put "through the book's".....I got told 1 month ago that Im getting kept on and still nothing......So basically, apart from not paying me the legal minimum wage, I am being "ripped off" even more as if I got sick etc I would not be entitled to anything :( Think I will be making a trip to my local Labour Office sometime this week aswell as looking for another job!!!!!!!!
