What happened there is terrible! I would expect the superpower to deal with this disaster in a much more efficient way.

Any people from that area?

Actually, because the USG is a superpower – this is the reason the disaster occurred. You just cannot organize and mobilize Federal, State, and Local resources that quickly. The difference in what organizational effort exercised comparing New Orleans and New York (post 9/11) is that the mayor had the ability to pull different groups together. Rudolph Giuliani had this leadership skill set, the mayor of New Orleans, well he didn’t.

1. The mayor called for an evacuation, but did not order any city bus drivers in to the city to pick up people for the 5 days prior.
2. The Police and fire equipment is now under water, because the Mayor or his staff did not recommend the movement of the equipment north of the city to the Police Academy.
3. Earlier this year, the mayor refused to fund the cost of satellite phones and was dependant on cell phones that in the end did not work. He had no ability to coordinate any effort.

You also need to understand that New Orleans has an odd, strange characteristic that many Americans dislike, as a city. It would be the equivalent of Cypriots in Pathos finding out that the other vacation nemesis Agia Napa had fallen off the island. They may not even bat an eye.

The US will get through it. The city will be rebuilt.

Why? Because environmental concerns or not, sadly the USG can afford it.

What do you mean? That other Americans would not care if their compatriots were dying???

I think blaming a mere Mayor for a disaster of this scale is an excuse. Such kind of disaster is a national (if not international) disaster and a single Mayor is definitely not enough to handle it.

Bush was thinking too much about "terrorists" and oil and he forgot about the poor citizens of his own country.
