Postby lindy1706 » Wed Sep 07, 2005 10:38 am

Hi all,

After taking the advice of my boss  I have gone ahead and imported my Left hand drive car into Cyprus (apprantly it would not be a problem as he had imported his last year :? . Anyhow I am now having a devils own job insuring it! Anyone know of a cypriot insurance company that will actually insure a LHD?

thanks

I was under the impression that LHD cars were illegal in the Republic, except for visitors. Where did your boss insure his?

S.J. Zevlaris Insurance Agency- Nicosia
22699999 or fax 22699700

You must submit your car to the “head light” inspection. This is another “Bull-crap” governmental hurdle. Basically, the RoC Department of Transportation believes that the headlights of left-hand drive cars are pointed to the middle-left of the road. So they will use black tape to modify the coverage area of the light. The tape blew off after 3 weeks.

Hi Lindy. Noticed that you live in Larnaca. If you go to Archbishop Makarios III street, to where the roadworks are and the old roundabout, there is an office there for GAN Direct Insurance. I'm insured with them and have no complaints about them at all. They have a website so I'm assuming they will be able to tell you by email or phone if they can insure it for you.

Hi,

Thanks for all your replies, have managed to get insurance thru an agent who softened considerably when we told him we also needed home, boat and some medical insurance! Welcome to Cyprus! :)

I had the same thing with headlights in the UK needed the black tape mod which blew off in about 1 month

Left handers are not illegal in the Republic, but you do apparantly need to have a large sticker on the back of the car with a picture of a steering wheel and an arrow pointing to the left, this was explained to me by the customs man who said that drivers in Cyprus got worried if they saw no driver at the right hand side (maybe he was winding me up!) if this is the case I will take great pleasure in sitting my Beagle in the passenger seat with a seat belt on and driving him around :)
