WOW!!! I knew it was about time this happened...

Primetel is a new company in Cyprus, they are going to offer everything from ADSL to Dial-up and telephone lines completely bypassing Cyta's crappy network.

They are going to build their own infrastructure?

That would take ages. Have they started?

By the way, I've heard that Otenet is also going to build its own network and bypass Cyta, is that correct?

I cant verify this, but a friend who works at CYTA is claiming that no one will bypass their network and create their own infrustructure. Instead CYTA will become something like BT in the UK.

Hey man... I think your friend is wrong... I lived in Enfield (north london) and the BT network their was bypassed by a cable company telewest. Not only did i have a telephone line which was totally free from BT i also had cable internet (1mb) and cable Tv, which i later replaced with Sky Digital as telewest was taking it's time in becoming digital.

Cablenet and Primetel look set to create a second private network in all major areas of Cyprus... And it looks like the Cypriots have learned a smart lesson: To keep the wires above ground and save having to dig the entire island to put wires underground.

I am actually referring to the infrustructure..we all had skydigital in our homes, but everyone uses the telephone lines etc that were isntalled by BT ages ago.

This is what I meant.

Sorry, I didn't mean to mention Sky digital.... Forget Sky digital for a moment.

I used to have a cable telephone line supplied from Telewest Cable company. They also supplied me with 1mb internet.... Neither of these technologies went through the BT infrastructure! It was a direct connection to Telewest.

As far as i know cable companies are the only real competitors to Cyta. Once they make their mark in Cyprus cyta will start to change it's current attitude of "we are the kings of Cyprus and nobody can mess with us"...

Two technologies will be huge competitors in Cyprus: Cable companies and Cyta. A third technology is on the horizon called WiMAX which will eliminate the need for wires. It will provide Internet and telephone lines to consumers but it will be wireless, so it could be that in 10 years we have 10 Cyta companies to choose from not including the cable companies which are currently trying to estblish themselves.
