If you were to replace religion with this atheism, how would you fill in this huge social void?

The buddhists seem to manage.

Yeah, they chant by day and self immolate by night!

Apart from Bananiot and Tim Drayton (from whom I received a PM) is there anybody else here who is atheist, agnostic or non-religious or who shares my views about the required reforms even though he is a religious person?

Given that religion in Cyprus is not forced upon adults, and students are allowed to excuse themselves from anything religious at school (from what my wife the secondary school teacher tells me), I cannot see what the problem is. :?

Absolutely reh Atheist... all religions save one are a load of pollocks.

The only true path to enlightenment and eternal life is to follow the faith of the Celestial Teapot, which invisibly circles the Solar System and which is only knowable to those who have faith in it and it is the source of all knowledge and human morals... those of you scabby lot who don't believe in it will Burn in Hell for your heathen ways... don't say you ain't been warned.

... oh and welcome to CF.

There are many Atheists/Agnostics in Cyprus.

What does it matter who of us are Atheist or Agnostic? Why do you need to know? I don't think it is very important at all.

Judging by our younger generations, I think Atheism is alive and well.

And I don't think religiosity is forced upon anyone. Maybe the curiculum needs updating, and judging by all the "motherland" hang ups, that would probably be a good thing for the greater good of our island's future unity (let's hope so anyway).

I am also atheist and I will keep in mind what you said when they come to me for the census. I hope that the case with your parents was an isolated event and a result of some incompetent employee trying to finish his work earlier.

Religious Studies, in the UK, are compulsory until age 16 - but with the option to withdraw for the last few years.
