Internet security / isecurity.exe virus

Anyone been hit?

It breezes its way past most security applications - Your browser will close and not reopen - you cannot load task manager and you find you have a pop up window pretending to be an antivirus program but that you never knowingkly had dowloaded telling you everythinhg is infected with the blaster worm or similar. You have a new icon showing a shortcut to the program on your desk top, but cannot find it installed to uninstall it using control panel add/remove programs (or the latest iteration).

It took me about 3 hours to kill it!

In future if you suspect your system is virus infected, all you need to do is restart your computer in safe mode with networking support via [F8] upon bootup; which would not permit anything other than bare basics to load into memory, and then simply scan your system with an ONLINE virus scanner such as…

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/

http://onlinescan.avast.com/

http://www.f-secure.com/en/web/labs_glo ... ne-scanner

As you can see you don’t even need to have anti-virus software installed on your system (and I don’t recommend that you do) taking up valuable disk space and consuming precious memory and CPU machine cycles 24/7!

Piece of cake and end of story!

I'll drink to that!

I even saw someone that had 2 anti-virus programs installed, it was almost impossible to run anything else on their machine!

I forgot to mention that there are 1 or 2 extremely rare cleverly written viruses that are capable of loading and taking control of a system even in safe mode (probably by writing a copy of themselves to the boot sector) in which case the solution is to remove the hard disk and connect it as a secondary drive to another healthy computer from where you can scan and clean the infected drive without fear of the virus loading into memory.

But you’re new, you try, and you’re not a nuisance so you have the potential of becoming a good contributor.

Shall I start a poll to find out who the rest of the members think is the most boring out of the 2 of you?

Hang on, for a poll like that we would have to include VP. Oh, and probably Yaloser. I expect I could probably think of a few more!
