Identify a plant

Postby londoner » Wed Mar 07, 2012 4:03 pm

I am trying to identify a Cypriot herb like perennial which I believe is known as LIGANO or something similar. It smell mentholly, with green furry type foilage and short and bushy. Any ideas?

I know the one you mean (does look like oregano). It's really hardy, sturdy, and grows everywhere, especially up in the mountains, near the roadsides/tracks.

- I think it's some kind of Salvia.

Thanks Get Real - looks like the plant

Thanks GreekIsland Girl - it appears to be Origarum Vulgaris which has as far as I can determine no culinary use but is widely used by herbalists and homeopaths

Still unsure to the plants identity - perhaps an image may help someone with identification

In cypriot "louganika" there is a small round black ingredient, that kind of looks like peppercorn, usually referred to by cypriots as "shino", would anyone know the proper scientific name for it?

Email this bloke with the picture, [email protected], he is the one who writes in the Cyprus Sunday Mail about all this stuff and will definitely know what it is (providing he hasn't broken his computer again!).
