Taxes when ordering from abroad

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

If you buy a $900 cam from OUTSIDE the EU, including the USA, you will certainly be charged at least 15%, probably more.

But sneezing7 said he ordered many things from Australia and he never paid tax. Except from that one case with the software did you have to pay taxes any other time? Maybe you got very unlucky. That ebuyer site that you gave me has 2 prices. One with VAT and one without. If I order from Cyprus which one I will have to pay? If I don't pay the UK VAT wouldn't they make me pay VAT in Cyprus?

In my first reply I think (I haven’t re-checked) that I said you could do it legally or illegally. Legally you have to pay VAT and duty if you are buying from outside the EU.

If you buy from another EU country, VAT and duty should have already been paid and you should have no need to pay it again here.

Yes, I've paid on importing many times. Before joining the EU I ordered a lot of stuff from Germany, typically €200 worth a time, and was ALWAYS charged the VAT (8-15%) and often duty as well. Now, of course, the Germans add the VAT and I don't pay anything. EU regs are clear: the vendor selling within the EU must always charge VAT at the local rate (there are a few variations, but they don't apply in this context). I've also been charged from other countries, including the USA. Only once I can remember not paying anything when it was theoretically due and that was on a packet worth about £40. Possibly the Customs decided that collecting £6 was not worth the hassle.

:x Maybe it depends from which post office you collect your parcel? How come the others didn't pay? Do you know what the duty is for such items?

It is not the PO which is responsible: it is the Customs. If they started to ignore the application of the tariffs every time a packet is addressed to the third cousin twice removed of the brother-in-law's coumbari, they would not achieve their quota and, therefore zero promotion, or worse (sweeping the floor).
