Well I think the virus dies if you cook the chicken at 80 C for about 30 mins.

The best they can do is to treat it with anti-viral drugs either before or after the illness takes hold.Preferably before as once it starts you have about 24 hours to diagnose and begin treatment, otherwise the patient is in big trouble.

Are these anti-viral drugs special for bird-flu? Or the usual anti-viral drugs? Would it be a good idea if we stock in our homes some of these drugs? If the situation goes our of control I can see how the demand/supply of these drugs will develop! :?

Sotos,Merhaba(Yiasou)
The Cyprus Mail article you posted have plenty of good advice, but I suppose that won't stop people from panicking.By all means stock the antiviral drugs which are proven effective in fighting the most dangerous of the viruses, the H5N1,for your own peace of mind. But the best thing you can do is to build up your immune system by exercise and good diet and herbal methods as the article suggests. There is another herbal remedy not mentioned in that article which escapes me now,but will find the name and post it here in a few days.

Sotos, sorry it took me so long to get back,my modem cooked as a result of lightning,I am using a friend's computer now.
The natural therapy I was thinking of was the use of "probiotics" such as "Lactobacillius".Lactobacillus bacteria form a significant part of the intestinal flora.Large populations of this and other lactic acid producing bacteria regulate the levels of friendly bacteria and reduce the levels of toxic pathogens that are responsible for ill health.
As our toxin levels increase our immune system has to work much harder and as a result our bodies can become compromised and things begin to go wrong.Probiotics on the other hand serve the purpose of strengthening our immune system so we could fight off terrible things like the dreaded bird flu.

Here is what I found on PIO:

No. 8 Tuesday, 25/10/2005

Measures to prevent the manifestation of the bird flu in Cyprus

The Government of Cyprus is fully aware of the necessity to take all the required measures to prevent the manifestation and spreading of the bird flu virus in Cyprus. The current situation in Cyprus, arising from the existence of the cease-fire line, should not prevent the taking of these measures and as far as the Cyprus Government is concerned, it will not be an obstacle. The Authorities of the Republic are already taking such action so as to foster the cooperation needed in order to take these measures, along with those in the occupied part of Cyprus, who can, in practice, contribute to the prevention of the manifestation of the virus. The Government considers such cooperation to be satisfactory.

It is understood that cooperation does not affect, and cannot be interpreted as affecting the political and legal reality that the part of the Republic of Cyprus currently not under the effective control of the Cyprus Government, is under the illegal military occupation and the full political control of Turkey, and that the administrative mechanisms in that area are illegally operating and constitute nothing but a subordinate local administration of Turkey, as the European Court of Human Rights has ruled. Security Council Resolutions 541 (1983) and 550 (1984) continue to be valid and binding for all parties and make it very clear that the secessionist entity in the occupied part of Cyprus is illegal and that no state should be assisting or supporting it.

It is noted, in this context, that the primary concern of the Cyprus Government is to protect the health of the entire population of Cyprus, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots alike, but also of all those people who are present in the territory of Cyprus. To this end, the Government is doing everything that is humanly possible.

At the same time, it is noted that the Cyprus Government is participating fully in the Pan-European mobilization to prevent the spreading of the virus. In this context the Government of Turkey is urged to rise to the occasion and provide to the Turkish authorities all the appropriate directives for cooperation between the competent authorities of the two countries and for the coordination of their actions as required by the European political culture of good neighbourliness and normal relations. It is hoped that Turkey realizes that due to the nature of the risk involved and the manner in which the virus spreads, it is obligated to cooperate with the Republic of Cyprus for the prevention of the spreading of the virus, for the benefit of the health and security of all its own citizens, the other European citizens and the citizens of our neighbouring countries.

The Government of Cyprus expects that the EU Presidency and the European Commission will offer their good offices in order to achieve a wider regional cooperation, through the coordination of actions between the Governments of Cyprus and Turkey, in addition to other ways. Addressing such a serious risk for the sake of our citizens could be a very good beginning for the normalization of Turkey’s relations with the Republic of Cyprus, as is clearly required by the Declaration of the 25 EU member-states issued on the 21st of September, as well as the recently approved Negotiations Framework between Turkey and the EU.

5 paragraphs of political propaganda and not a single word about practical measures or advice to bird owners or the general public. :(
