Need Soya milk, can we buy it?

Postby matthew haynes » Sun Oct 16, 2005 8:44 am

We are visiting the island next week, my Son has a milk alergy and can only drink Soya milk. Can anyone tell me if I can buy it on the island? He likes the brand ALPRO but anything will do.

Thanks

Most of the large (?) supermarkets have some form of soya milk or another, but it seems quite expensive, compared with cow's milk.

Hi Mathew,

Orphanides the large supermarket sells it and you will also find it in some of the larger pharmacists that have a health food section.

Cost maybe slightly more than the UK

You can find soya milk easily. I guess they sell it mostly to foreigners since I don't know any Cypriot that drinks it.

Out of curiosity is he allergic to animal milk, or just Cow's Milk?

Maybe Sheep & Goat Milk is a better alternative from Soya

When he was born we gave him some formula milk; Hi whole body went bright red and he was violently sick. Very scary when it is your first child.

We belive that he is allergic to cows milk however he has a reaction to raw egg if he gets that on his skin.

Our problem now is that he absolutly loves Soya, his first words every mornining is 'milk' The idea of going away for a week without having it on tap would be hell.

I think that Soya is high in sugar which we are not happy about.

Thank you to everyone who has replied so far. It is a great help.

We are staying in Protaras which I have been told is tiny so I imaging Paralimni will hold the nearest big market.

You can also buy goats' milk here in all the major supermarkets, if you wish to take the risk of trying him with a drop: it contains different proteins from cow's milk, so he may be OK.

Cyprus is a nation of shopkeepers (Napoleon had never visited here when he saidd that of England!). Even the big supermarket chains have shops which are small by international standards. I think the biggest one is Orphanides' "mall" at Strovolos and you could get three of those into the department store at the end of a typical US mall or four or five of them into Selfridges in Oxford Street. This means that there are smaller, but good, supermarkets just about everywhere. The village I live in has about 1100 inhabitants and three small supermarkets (unfortunately, the best and friendliest one is now closed because the owner, his wife and daughter were killed in the Helios crash - I miss them as people). So don't be surprised if you find all you need just a few steps away.

Hi Mathew,
If you are in Protoras then Paralimni orphanides is the nearest for you and yes they do stock it.
My son had the same problem. I fed him until he was 6 month and then tried him with a teaspoon of cows milk. He threw up was covered in red spots within seconds, very scary. I put him on soya and he loved it too.
He's now 22 and can have milk without problems. They do grow out of it sometimes.

Thank you very much - one last question....

We are looking forward to fliging out on Saturday morning. But are wondering about a Cot. The apartment we are staying does not provide one. Is there any where locally that we could hire one?

You guys are all so kind helping me out by replying.
