Letting out a property by Non-National

Postby Mousey » Mon Oct 17, 2005 10:36 pm

Please forgive me if this is a recurring question - I did try to find the answer, but this forum is so active it will take me ages to trawl through all the wealth of information here. (Mark of a good forum!)

Question is this:- I have a book here by Anne Hall, 'Buying a home in Cyprus'. It has the following advice:-

"Cypriot law states that property owned by foreigners who aren't resident in Cyprus can be let only long-term to resident Cypriots or EU nationals. In other words, short term holiday lets are illegal."

Can anyone please confirm or deny this is the case, as I have had someone swearing blind that it is not true. (Someone who wants to sell me a house, naturally.)

Thank you, good people.

The only way to get a 100% correct answer is if you ask a lawyer. However I know that many foreigners buy property for short term holiday lets so I guess that if such law exists it is not enforced.

It is true but ignored by the thousands of Brits that buy property here and rent it out.

The holiday industry would collapse if the law was enforced.

Also, of course, it would have to be registered with the Cyprus Tourist Organisation, but no one does that either. I think the minimum letting period for a non-Resident is 30 days.

The Government cannot discriminate against (EU national) residents, in doing this.

It is one of the many ignored laws in Cyprus.
