Sufis in Cyprus...

Postby tsukoui » Fri Oct 12, 2012 1:50 pm

The only sufis in Cyprus I know are those belonging to the Naqshbandi-Haqqani tariqa under Sheikh Nazim.

Are there any other Sheikhs and tariqas not connected to Nazim?

Nazim claims heir to the mevlevi (whirling derivishes) as his grandmother was descended from Rumi or something like this, but I don't think any of his followers actually whirl. Are there any whirling dervishes left?

There is a mevlevi tekke in occupied Nicosia but it has been turned into a museum.

The Tekkes in the Turkish republic were closed by decree in 1925, and the centre of the Mevlevi order moved from Konya to Aleppo in Syria. Although the majority of Turkish Cypriots were in favour of the closure of the Tekkes in Cyprus, the British colonial administration on the island allowed the tradition to continue. The next sheik for the Tekke in Lefkosa would be sent from Aleppo rather from Konya, but his death in 1954 ended an era in which the whirling dervishes had performed their sacred dance in the Mevlevihane.

Perhaps we should write to Aleppo and request a new sheikh.

 Don't be a racist. Sufis should be allowed to come to Tottenham.

Sheikh Nazim actually already has a dergah and mosque in Green Lanes. But I'm really looking for a Sheikh other than Sheikh Nazim, not wishing to disrespect him, but I want to get a broader perspective.

30 years ago, at a Dominican Church in Chalk Farm London a Naqshibendi group affilliated the Sheykh Nazım was functioning. They had many followers. They did have whirlers, indeed they also had female whirlers too. The last time I saw them do the Sema' was at Ally Pally at a Mind & Spirit event. They still turn in Damascus. As to Cyprus I have no idea. Load of charlatans. Saw a load of Murids in medieval garb at Larnaca Airport.
