Car prices by Vehicle type

Postby zoopigi man » Mon Oct 24, 2005 1:37 pm

Can anyone advise me if Cyprus used vehicle prices are directly affected by their classification for registration and excise duties. So, for example, 2.8 litre saloon car hugely expensive, 1.8 litre saloon very expensive, 1.6 litre saloon cheap-ish, 2.0 litre double cabin cheap, 1.4 litre van almost free (joking!). Or is the relationship somewhat tangential - so everything expensive, but similar 1.6 litre saloon a bit cheaper than a 2.0 litre.

Cheers.

Hi ZM

The Import Duty, when cars are initially registered here, rises expotentially with engine capacity. Thus, cars with large engines are very expensive. My 2.5litre Mercedes cost me CY£56,000 last year, around twice what I would pay in mainland Europe. As a general rule new cars of 1.6 liter will be the same as most other EU countires, smaller engined cars will cost less, anything above 1.6 litre can be substantially more.

The price of secondhand cars tends to reflect what they cost when new, of course.

Road Tax and Registration Fees are similarly priced, again penalising large engined vehicles. However, the Government propose to end Road Tax and raise the levy on fuel from 2006

Thanks - very useful indeed!

I've had a good look around the internet for specifics on import duties and registraton fees. I managed to get the info. I wanted on import duties on the Customs and Excise web-site, but can't find anything on registration - don't suppose you know of any useful links?

Cheers,

Cars <1450cc £.1 per cc
1451 - 1650cc £.15 per cc
1651 - 2050cc £.25 per cc
2051 - 2250cc £.3 per cc
>2251cc £.6 per cc

So for example a 3,000cc car would cost £1,800 to register.

Oo er, forgot to ask one final question. The registration rates you quoted, are they same irrespective of vehicle type, or are double cabs cheaper, as per the import duty.

Thanks for your patience.

Hi ZM

Double Cabs are cheaper:

For example: 1651-2050cc £289-350
>2050cc £350

Ha, ha, ha, ha!

No, Cypriot businesses generally speaking don’t use the Internet or e-mail. Those that do won’t publish prices on it. :?
