Cyprus White Good Costs

Postby redstyke » Tue Nov 01, 2005 3:58 pm

Coming out to Cyprus 9-13th Nov to view some property around the Paralimni/Protaras - I'd be interested to know if anyone has this kind of information, some indicative prices for white goods to use as a guideline - not looking for top of the range equipment, just something that's decent and will last a few years. The goods I'm interested in are as follows:

Washing machine
Fridge/Freezer, 2/3:1/3 ratio, taller unit type
Air con - unit costs and installation
Hob units
Cooker/hob

Hi Redstyke,

There is a great white goods shop in Paralimni that I always use. It's
K. Theodoulou & sons (Electrica) Ltd.
20, 1st April street
Shop 5 & 6
Paralimni

Tel: (00 357) 23822060

Talk to Androulla, she speaks perfect english as she was born in the UK and is really helpful.

The price of those products depends on the brand and make. I believe in Cyprus such products are about 20% more expensive than the UK. :x

But it is generally worth buying locally in Cyprus: I assume you are from the UK. Dishwashers/washing machines here are cold fill only, fridge freezers here will have tropical rating, if you import a/c units then you will have to pay to have them fitted - and in my experience 'world-wide warranty' excludes Cyprus!

If you just want to get an idea of cost, things vary so much, many people like the 'amercian' fridge freezers with ice/chilled water dispensers.
a/c around £300 for a bedroom, around £450 for a main room.
Most white goods, as Sotos has suggested, are slightly more expensive than the UK but include delivery/fitting.

Always buy on value, never on price!

Domestic Lana is right.

We bought everything here new. A few points to note:-

1) There is a vast range to choose from – all the know brands you see in the UK plus a load you will never have heard of and prices to match.
2) In the larger stores (we got quotes from two or three) the assistants are extremely helpful and know everything about their products (unlike the pond life that ‘serves’ you in the UK).
3) If you are buying a complete set (cooker, hob, fridge/freezer, extractor, microwave, etc.) you can negotiate a substantial discount from the advertised prices.
4) Make sure that manuals in English are available.
5) If you are looking for a ‘combination’ microwave be aware that the ‘programs’ are not like those of an equivalent machine in the UK – no ‘jacket potato’ setting for instance.

When we first came here, we went also to a small dealer and he gave us a substantially better discount than the larger guys (and he still does on odd items we buy!)

Yes, basically when you consider the nightmare warranty issues that you could face with things you have bought in the UK it really makes no sense to bring things over.

Just by chance, a few minutes after I wrote this, wifey called down to say the oven isn't working. I went down with my multimeter and diagnosed the thermostat was kaput. I phoned said small dealer on his mobile (the shop was closed on Wed pm) and he said he would be here tomorrow morning ~ 9 am. Try that with one of the chain stores.

Plans for dinner changed: fry-up instead!

Any names/addresses/phone numbers of said such "small dealers" refreered to above would be appreciated as I feel we will need to move quickly while we are out there if the right property arises.

The one I deal with is Georgios Theodorou. His shop is about 250 m towards town from the Larnaca fire station crossroads, on the LH side. For me, he is truly a "gift from God" (you will understand this if you know a little Greek). Tell him Brian sent you and you expect the same discounts as he has!
