FOIP

Let's see how clever you buggers are out there!

Have any of you successfully set up FOIP (Fax Over IP) in Cyprus?

I have contacted loads of IT companies, ISP's, and large organisations, which should know how to do it, or should be using it, but I can't find a single installation on the island.

Everyone seems to convert the VOIP signal to analogue and feeds it in to a FAX machine, which seems a bit daft when with FOIP you can deliver it by email!

So?

What is the benefit of having such thing anyway? Why not just use email?

There are still luddites out there that use faxes. There are also legal reasons, but I can't be arsed to go into that.

If our telcos here do not provide FOIP then you could try a service such as http://www.myfax.com/ They give you a Cyprus Toll Free number (800) (I checked some other services but they didn't have Cyprus numbers) and when somebody sends you a fax at that number the fax comes to you as an email attachment. Similarly you can use email attachments to send faxes to anywhere you want... and I assume to the recipient it would appear that the fax came from your 800 number. They have a free trial if you want to try it out...

Thanks for looking, but I did know about these services. The telcos supposedly provide the correct protocols for FOIP, it is just no one has managed to get it to work, and a lot have tried!
