The Shura Council, the upper house of the Egyptian bicameral Parliament, has approved a draft law that cancels the maritime borders of an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) between Egypt and Cyprus, reports said Thursday.

Yes, but Turkey pulling on their Muslim Brotherhood business doesn't make this Internationally recognised. They have to go through the President and then the Constitutional Courts.

The Shura Council cannot pass legislation without the People’s Assembly, because it is supplementary to the lower house of Parliament, does not have political or legal powers and the regime does not give it any role in the political life, the plaintiffs said. Its continuation is a waste of public money and effort, they added.

There is something very odd about this story. Firstly, the deal between Cyprus and Egypt was not signed between Israel and Cyprus. That would be nonsense. The document is available here:

http://www.un.org/Depts/los/LEGISLATION ... 2003EZ.pdf

Apparently, Ouda is referring to the Israeli/Cyprus EEZ which Egypt claims is subject to its approval and is claiming for itself a share of a co-ordinate in Cyprus and Israel's agreement.

Coordinate 8 in the Egypt/Cyprus agreement happens to be coordinate 12 in the Israel/Cyprus agreement,32º 53' 20" latitude and 32º 58' 20" longitude, seen here:

This is not a scrapping of the agreement but Egypt raising a claim over co-ordinate 8. Any dispute, according to article 4, has to go to arbitration if it cannot be resolved through diplomatic channels. Don't see how Israel and Cyprus could agree to Turkey muscling in on this as it has nothing to do with them...

Turkey is just there to meddle, we all know she should have nothing to do with it and I would tentatively like to say that Egypt should know better.

Egypt has never questioned the EEZ agreement with Cyprus, FM stresses

The Egyptian government has never put in question the agreement between Cyprus and Egypt regarding the delimitation of a border line of the Exclusive Economic Zone between the two countries, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides has stressed.

Speaking here Thursday, after a Cabinet meeting, Kasoulides said that “the Egyptian government has never raised such an issue, nor has it questioned the agreement between the two countries relating to the Law of the Sea, an agreement which has been submitted to the UN”.

The Foreign Minister said that Egypt is a friendly country and that the issue emerged from a news story by the Egyptian News Agency, which referred to an internal discussion among Egyptian politicians in their House of Representatives.

“The position of the specific Member of the Parliament is well known”, Kasoulides said, adding that he does not wish to intervene in Egypt’s internal discussions. He also said that the Cyprus Foreign Ministry will issue an official press release on the matter.

Replying to questions, Kasoulides said that, under international law, a country cannot annul an international bilateral agreement. However, he pointed out that Egypt has never raised such an issue.

He added that neither the Egyptian Minister nor the Egyptian Ambassador, with whom he had a meeting yesterday, said anything about that issue.

Finally, Kasoulides said this development would not affect the research conducted in the Cyprus’ EEZ in a negative manner.

Boys and girls... don't be too concerned about this and let's look at this with a bit of CF Scepticism.

The story has been picked up from a single source last night which gave it as... A Bill has been Presented to the Egypt Upper House and which has became through poor web journalism a few hours later... A Bill Has Been Passed By the Egypt Upper House. It's a nonsense story inflated out of all proportion and without analysis.

So shall we analyse it...???

The EEZ Agreement with Egypt was signed and lodged with the UNCLOS Registry in 2003 and on the back of that agreement Egypt has progressed and developed the exploitation of its neighbouring EEZ to Billions of Dollars of exports and no amount of wishful thinking by the Neighbourhood Thief Turkey is going to jeopardise that huge Egyptian wealth.

Even if and that's a huge if, the EEZ could be re-negotiated it would need to pass the Egyptian Executive (as well as the Lower House). Absolutely no sign of that happening, especially as the former CY Foreign Minister Mrs Erato-Markoullis had an excellent relationship with the Egyptian Government and as recently as a few weeks ago visited Cairo and signed further agreements for more CY-Egypt co-operations on oil/gas.

The new CY Foreign Minister Mr Cassoulides met with the Egyptian Ambassador to CY only yesterday (the Ambassador who roughed up a CY policeman at LCA a few weeks ago) and there was not even a hint of a change in Egyptian policy. The issue wasn't even raised.

Mr Cassoulides has also said on CY TV and this puts the story in to the right perspective, that is that it is the opinion of just one Egyptian MP.

So there we have it... IT'S A NON-STORY.
