CyTA warns of hoax warning about scam

Postby Sotos » Wed Nov 09, 2005 4:26 am

CYTA yesterday warned its customers to be on the lookout for a hoax, which warns people of a mobile phone scam.

A press release purporting to be from the telecommunications giant was circulating yesterday, saying, “if you receive a call on your mobile phone from somebody claiming to be a CyTA technician who is carrying out a check, hang up the phone without pressing any numbers on your keypad. You will be asked to key in 90 or 09.

“This is a scam which uses a device which, when you press the desired digits, can access your SIM card and make calls on your bill.”

CyTA spokeswoman Sofia Yianacou yesterday told the Cyprus Mail that, “this e-mail is a hoax and has absolutely nothing to do with us at all. We are trying to find out where this has come from and who the perpetrators are. As soon as our investigations turn up any further information, we will be issuing a statement.”

The e-mail was accompanied by two contact telephone numbers, which were not answered when called.
