I don't think I have ever argued that the Minoans were in any way conquerors of an existing Cretan population and I have always been happy to accept that they like many other peoples of the Eastern med can trace the majority of their ancestry ( at least on the Maternal side) to the first permanent settlers of those regions . The conquest events came later on, and the Minoans and Cypriots were probably the victims of such conquests, which probably eliminated much of the original culture at least of the ruling classes.

However, Whether or not inferences can be drawn about cultural matters or the development of the original civilisation from such analysis is a different matter, particularly bearing in mind that proto urban civilisation was developing in the region where theses peoples likely originated at or just after they began to spread and where we do not know for sure how much cultural exchange there was. I am not arguing against the premise of local development, I have an open mind on that, simply from these two items I can't see how those inferences are drawn.

Enough, stud. There is no need for your waffling. The science speaks for itself.

- The Minoan culture was developed by the people who were living on Crete from thousands of years earlier, and their descendants are still prevalent in Crete, as well as further afield across Europe due to their sea-faring skills etc.

Thank you - that's a really great summary of the findings for those who don't want to trawl through the scientific jargon. :D

Migratory DNA studies should put an end to many historical revisionist theories (like the one above) which developed to conceal the prejudices and political aspirations underpinning the waves of colonialism springing up over the last few centuries. Many sought to plunder and rewrite the history of the Greek islands and mainland, to appease their own egos and justify the proliferating plunder based on newly-emerging myths that these cultures did not belong to the people who NOW inhabit these lands. (Little wonder that the present-day backward nations are fighting hard to keep people in ignorance of science's power to unravel mysteries.)

You seem alone in your interest in Minoans... you do realise that we’ve got much more important things to worry about here in Cyprus.

On the contrary, this was posted to inform and in no way to distract anyone from their personal miseries and woes.

and that equally applies to Cyprus which in origin was NOT a Greek island as its original inhabitants were not Greek (and was the case with Crete) but the Greek Culture was imposed on them by ancient conquest and colonialism .....

Nothing was called "Greek" nor "Minoan" nor "Cypriot" some 9,000 years ago or even 5,000 years ago. English was not invented! But the point you deliberately miss is that the people who populated this region some 9,000 years ago were highly related, went on to develop various changing art-forms, communicated with each other via trading and mating and co-developed for the next few thousand years whilst migrating to-and-fro from each other's islands and the mainland, speaking to each other in one dialectically-rich tongue.

Invaders are the recent folk who came from thousands of miles away over the course of the last few centuries in order to destroy this way of living.
