Brilliant post! and loved the 1964 Divonne quote. Fantastic. I bet you drive a 5 series and listen to the Eagles.

No seriously though, your racism slur had me in stitches. Love the conclusion that you decided to arrive at.

Ok, let's pick apart my own statement...
I make the assertion that perhaps, in these run down and delapidated casinos (as they are, I have seen them and heard reports) the members of staff resemble a rabble of unkempt and untidy misfits.

Why? Well, lets start on the fact that the territory in question suffers from great poverty and is technically illegal, according to the UN and the EU, and thus is isolated from injections of cash and foreign fashion trends.

Second...the casinos are not legit. They are dodgy back end dives owned by gangsters in the ar*e end of nowhere. Of course you dont go to them. These places are offensive....so why not make the assumption that the peope who work there are a bit, well, scummy.

Nothing to do with racism.

And at least my views are founded on personal experience in the world of casino gambling, which I'll have you know is vast. I have been to casinos in France, UK, Germany, Austria, America, Australia (Melbourne, Sydney, Cairns, Brisbane) and New Zealand. So guess what? I know what Im talking about.

And my guess is, croupiers in the beleaguered north dress and look like cr*p. We're not talking about respectable establishments, so join the real world and stop being so pious.

Sorry people, but I believe most of you have not been into any casino so far, and I dont mean the ones in the North. Pro casinos will not allow you if you are not a member or are invited by a member. If you want to become a member, you authorize the Casino to check for credit availability etc. If you loose your money, anyway, it is not Casino's problem, but your sole mind! You can easily become bankrupt by shopping, play lotto, bingo etc. In this way, credit cards should be banned as well. It is all a matter of setting rules and try (?...) to apply them. The government can even implement taxes to Casinos as well, like in the case of VAT in clubs, cabarets etc.

Cypriots pouring millions into casinos around the world

Postby Sotos » Sun Jan 15, 2006 12:10 pm

FIGURES from credit card clearing agency JCC show that Cypriots are huge spenders in casinos across the world, with the biggest recipients being the UK and Turkey (through the occupied areas).

According to the research, which was conducted by JCC, Cypriots last year spent a total of £11,663,368 on credit cards alone at casinos across the world.

Because the occupied north is not a recognised state, credit card transactions there show up with a Turkish code, but with casinos banned in Turkey, Cypriot casino spending can easily be traced to the north.

Between October 1, 2004 and November 24, 2005, Cypriots spent a total of £1,342,949 in the north in a total of 9,367 transactions in casinos. Those figures do not include cash gambling at casinos.

The Chairman of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) Fotis Fotiou recently estimated the total amount spent in the north last year at £20 million.

But spending at casinos in the north is actually dwarfed by the UK, which last year raked in a cool £6,712,154 from Cypriot gamblers.

Israel finished as the third highest recipient of casino credit card transactions, with £244,673, followed by Russia, which earned £205,714.

Fotiou has long campaigned for casinos in the south to offset the lure of gambling in the north.

“The creation of casinos would help to give quality service to tourists visiting the island and to Greek Cypriots interested in gambling, instead of the sleazy, low-class game clubs in the north,” he said.

recently I have seen many people financially ruined when leaving the casinos in Newcastle. I would imagine this is the trend throughout the UK since we relaxed the membership rules. You had to be a member or apply for membership atleast 24 hrs before playing, now you can walk straight in. After a night out drinking this is dangerous!

All of my Cypriot in-laws are serious gamblers and never miss a chance to visit a Casino or two or three whenever they visit the UK. One brother-in-law has been very successful over the years and has made a small fortune and one sister-in-law has gambled away most of her property, the rest well perhaps the least said the better.
Not being a gambler I was became fairly worried when in the late 1970's my wife suggested that we should join her family as their guests and visit the London Victoria Sporting Club. Having never won an argument with my wife I swallowed hard and agreed. Armed with fifty pounds each (a fair amount for us at that time) we had a great time and by 11pm I had won about three hundred pounds and my wife several hundred pounds, I stopped playing and my wife continued. By the time we left the casino she did'nt have a penny left to tip the cloak room attendant, depressed you can that again! she was sick for a week and has never ever wanted to gamble again. A great first and last visit to a casino and the best fifty pounds she has ever spent!

My opinion is that casinos should be opened in free territories. I don't agree with claims that opening of casinos will lead to more bankruptcies then now. Don;t forget that anyone of GC can go to North and be ripped off in casino there. What's the difference for him tio be ripped off there or here? At least part of his money will go the the budget of Cyprus :)

And also the casinos offers free food and drinks. That's not bad when you can go there, change 10 pounds for the whole evening and drink and eat as much as you want. Save your money! Go to casinos instead of pubs :) :) :)
