What irks me the most about these companies is that they do not pay their pilots enough.

Cyprus Airways pays even less unfortunately, while there is an abundance of middle management koumbaroi of Christofias dead wood and complete good for nothing waste of space!

Cyprus Airways will sadly fold and a new airline will take its place. That is the only way all the workers can be sacked cutting the shit out and thus allowing the new airline to re-employ who it wants whilst the other leeches piss off to the unemployment lines and good riddance to them.

Sorry to disagree with you, but when Concordes were still flying, Cyprus Airways pilots were earning more than Concorde pilots.

I know a few CY pilots, including one who also now owns numerous Chinese & Japanese restaurants here, all financed by his CY pilots salary!

That's not what I heard. FO is 5000 pm and Captains are at 10,000 pm.

Market is 20,000 pm plus.

Having said that, I was offered a job in Greece with Olympic Airways in 1996 on B737-400 as an FO with 300 hours. Start was 450,000 drachma per month which equates to 500 AUD per week. I would have taken it if it were not for another opportunity.

How did I get that? My Godsister's husband was a top surgeon and knew the PASOK Minister of Health. I sent the Minister my CV, and got a phone call from Olympic for an interview and sim check. Had a contract in front of me within days!

I know that in the late 90's most of them were on over CY£90K including all their allowances.

In Greece it was 450,000 drachma per month for an FO. Captains were on 2 million per month.

Wbich equates to about 90k. Today Captains at Cyprus Airways are on 120k. It is not high in the market place in the current environment. Cyprus Airways Captains could walk into Emirates, Etihad, Saudi, Gulf Air, Cathay/Dragonair, Qatar et al and double their wages as a minimum.

90k is pretty bad CBBB for A320 Captains.

Yes mate, I was meant to say that 120k today is below market parity.

The general consensus is that Cyprus Airways Pilots are overpaid. People are looking for a scapegoat. This is not the case. Cyprus Airways Pilots are not overpaid if you compare to other airlines around the world.

In fact, they are underpaid.

In Cyprus Airways case, you will find that the companies woes are not due to the Pilots, Cabin Crews or Engineers. These guys are qualified and professional people. But there is plenty of dead wood due to people occupying positions either that are not required or positions they do not have appropriate qualifications or expertise to offer the Airline any value for money. This will change now with all the redundancies but it could still be too late unfortunately.

The good thing is that a new airline will form from the ashes. Hopefully they can get it right.

Pilots always seem to cop undue attention. In fact management generally use pilots as a scapegoat. Unfortunately, there have been some negative developments which I hear about from the Australian Federation of Airline Pilots (union). 120 kids borrowed money in order to pay for an expensive B737 endorsement under the false pretence of getting a job with one of the budget carriers.

This is the type of thing people should be mindful of when supporting budget carriers. It will eventually come to a head.

AFAP was a very militant union in the 90s. It bought the country to a stand still during the general QANTAS and ANSETT strikes. It also took down an Australian Government but because it was a Labour Government that went down, it was removed from the Labour Council. Unfortunately, it will come to this once again if tgese carriers continue to employ inexoerienced crew after making them mortgage their homes for an endorsement and paying them 70k.

Things are not at all good in the budget sector. Sure the average Brit pisshead won't care, but those with half a brain should.

Latest not good news news suggests that possibly soon no one will fly with cy as future subsidies have been banned...

http://greece.greekreporter.com/2013/12/09/troika-no-state-subsidy-for-cyprus-airways/

When the money runs out they are dead. Not good news.

The hammer might fall very fast indeed if the Toffee arse subsidy is declared illegal and the airline is ordered by Brussels to pay it back as happened with Malev.

The only hope is to find a buyer and possibly fast...

Is Agean the phoenix of Oympus Airways? I'm flying back home on CA next week from Abu Dhabi; it is a share though and the flight is Etihad. I have always liked flying with CA and thought it well worth the money.

This is disgraceful for the airline to be allowed to fail in this way. Ok, it needs to be reformed, instead of collecting IPT from the people, let them be share holders and the money could go to buy the firm and turn it around. How much are they asking €30m, I would buy it if I could. The CY flag needss to fly worldwide, it is not just any old airline, it is Cyprus Airways and that is significant for an island like us.

We are blessed with a bunch or wankers as politicians, no foresight, but then I guess we get what we deserve.

Shame, bloody shame.

Cyprus Airways has apparently been one of the arenas where too many people got sinecures though rusfeti, nepostism, and similar, and where modernisation of eg working practices was held up by those other pillocks of the establishment, the Unions.

as matters stand I would not like to take on CY as its still has the potential to be a bottomless pit consuming money.

I don't think there will be any problem finding a buyer. The problem is that we've been forced to sell-off all our national companies as part of the bankers' control over the EU.

Still, plenty of Greek shipping and travel magnates able to salvage the situation by stepping in and continuing our enosis...

( @ stud - Try some Olive Oil moisturizer for that skin condition of yours. )
