Thinking of taking a job in Cyprus...

Postby mckinneytexas » Thu Nov 24, 2005 6:21 pm

Hi,
My husband is thinking of taking a job overseas and it will be based in Cyprus. They will be moving all of us there. How is it living here coming from the states and a big city?
How is it for small children gowing up here?
And the housing what is it like?

Any feedback would be wonderful.

Thanks,
Nicholle

The paphos area has lots to offer and the people, well the ones we know are so freindly and helpful.
I wish you lots of luck and happiness if your husband decides to take up the job offer and I am sure that if you give Cyprus a chance you will enjoy your stay very much.

Where in the States do you come from; there are probably more people living in Manhattan than Cyprus, you will not believe how small our island is. Apart from 'gasoline' most things are cheaper here but some margin.
Does your husband know what salary will be offerred, it will come as a shock!

Big plusses: the very low rate of crime compared with the US and nearly everyone speaks English (even though you don't!!).

Big minus: the almost total lack of customer care compared to the US --and we drive on the left.

Climate; depends upon where in the US you live; I was in New York earlier this year and it was below zero for the whole trip. It gets warm here in the Summer - but Death Valley it is not.

Tell us where you live and what your hobbies and interests are and maybe we can comment further.

THe waterslide parks are pretty good.

People get worked up about politics in Cyprus so don't bring anything up or they start throwing chairs and tables.

Cypriots don't think its rude to stare at people. All Cypriots are amazing singers.

Village life is great for kids. I spent 6 months is a small village in Cyprus when I was 9 it was amazing. Cypriot kids love foreigners The village kids used to follow me and my brothers where ever we would go. Villagers are super hospitable. City folk are generally arse holes though as with anywhere else in the world.

Hi Nicholle

You will be in for such a shock; as you know everything in Texas is so BIG (except Southfork, which suprised me by being so small!), even Texans always struck me as being big people (must be the 48 ounce steaks!). After Dallas/ouston, you will find the shops here disappointing.

Whereas your climate is subtropic/subhumid with hot summers and dry winters, Cyprus has similar Summer temperatures (with no rainfall) but wet winters.

My advice, be prepared for a major change but with a positive spirit you will learn to love our very different culture.

BTW we have McDonalds and Starbucks, so civilisation has reached us!

Is your husband going to Fly Emirates?

mckinneytexas, where in Texas do you live?
Texas has some huge cities, but it also has smaller towns.

Cyprus cities can not be compared with the huge cities of Texas (e.g. Huston). However Limassol or Nicosia with a population of around 200.000 have a lot more to offer than 99% of similarly sized US cities.

So unless you are coming from a big city and you like the big city life you will not miss that much if you come to Cyprus.
