How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

TRNC Flag Subject

Postby PEACE » Sat Sep 04, 2004 10:59 pm

I was reading the posts under "Unification Of Turkey & Greece" topic.Than i realized that it turned to "avatar discussion" of Turker.Cos he used TRNC flag in his avatar.

Piratis wrote:the "TRNC" flag is nothing more than a partitionist flag as well. That flag represents the illegal state in the north, and not the Turkish Cypriot community.

I'm not a supporter of TRNC flag to be used after solution but you know the solution will be federal. Each federal constituent state will have a flag except from the federal main goverment. So i wonder if we choose TRNC flag as our constituent state's flag what you will say?
You will continue saying "It's a symbol of occupation and seperation."?

If the opportunity to choose the Greek Cypriot constituent state flag what will you choose as the flag? Republic Of Cyprus flag, flag of Greece or a completly new flag?

This was the case with the Annan plan, it doesn't mean that a future solution will include this also.

I personally disagree with separate flags, anthems and citizenships.(especially with anthems and citizenships). These are things that suggest partition and separation and not unity.

We should all be under one flag. And by the way, the Republic of Cyprus flag was designed by both Turkish and Greek Cypriots. It has no red or blue in it, and it is probably the most unique flag of all countries.

Maybe we can change it a bit after a solution to show that what we have now is something new, but I believe the shape of the island should remain in our flag.

Piratis, if a federal solution is adopted and THEN the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots want to get rid of their individual states and become one forever, they can. But one step at a time. Especially to get rid of those mistrusts.

I never said that they should get rid of their states (if we agree on a fedearal solution). But a federation doesn't mean that the country is not one. It is still one country made by two federal states. Thats what federation is.

What I am saying is that the bond between these two states should be made strong, and not just create something that can easily brake like Yugoslavia or Chehoslovakia.

Piratis, you want unitary solution but not federal. In federal solution if we want each state should have its flag except from the federal state.

Yes, in the US all states have a flag also, but they are not considered that important by the people. What they don't have though are national anthems and state citizenships.

The reason I have a problem with this is that many Turkish Cypriots see the federal state as just a stepping stone to partition. We made a compromise to have a federal solution, so they should make also some compromises to make sure that anything that can be used by partitionists should be avoided (one of those things should be the state flags in my opinion).
