How can you have unification talks when one side clearly do not want it and are forced by their puppet master to go ahead. Sounds like a recipe for disaster. Seems like they are looking for any solution to enable Turkey into the EU at the expense of the GCs again.

If Anastasiades offers any of the previous dead and buried AP again he is dead in the water as it will never get voted in and he wouldn't be around for long.

From everything I have read so far, it seems positive on the position Anastasiades has taken in not repeating the AP again. No wonder VP is panicking with this joint statement.

at least give us one example that is different so far from your point of view. was not all this in the annan plan. in fact it is better then than the annan plan. one side is not allowed to dominate the other. how about that.

Kiks, there is nothing I want more than peace in Cyprus, but if it is just to appease Turkey and the US/UK again, then I doubt it will be to our benefit. From what I have read so far, this declaration has ceded many things to the TCs before we even begin. I may be wrong, but if this is so, then we are on a non starter.

The puppet in the north will still put forward ideas and principles that are not compatible with those the EU was founded on. Turkey, Eroglu & associates are clueless and unqualified in this area.

There cannot be any guarantors - which Turkey and the puppets will not agree to.

Cyprus will enjoy democracy - which I cannot see the Turks agreeing to.

They still want veto's and shares from the Greek Cypriots.

The Turks will still ignore the UN resolutions.

Turkey, Eroglu & associates still want recognition and a separate state and believe that - if the talks fail they will achieve this.

“Our common goal is the termination of the illegal Turkish occupation and the comprehensive, agreed just, viable and functional solution which fully secures the single sovereignty, international personality and citizenship of a united Cyprus, its EU and eurozone status and implementation of EU laws throughout Cyprus,” said Samaras.

Any solution would have to be accepted through simultaneous referenda in which lawful residents of the two communities will participate, said Samaras, adding: “Greece will continue to support the president on procedure and substance.”

The Greek PM also reiterated his country’s continued support to Cyprus in the exercise of its sovereign rights in its exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

“These rights emanate from international law, are recognised by the international community in its entirety with the exception of Turkey, which unfortunately, persists in unacceptable, and for sure, ultimately futile tactics to escalate tensions and impose new facts.”

First of all many thanks to Bill C, who as usual brought in the news fast to this forum together with original quotes.

I expected to see a more serious discussion on the matter of the joint declaration.
I mean this is the most serious development over the past 2 years or so....
Shouldn't it deserve a point by point discussion rather than the usual one shot nonsense?

Supposedly the whole thing will be signed on Monday. If this happens I will be back with my comments.

 ... Yes, an exceptionally serious matter, it would be good to see some detailed views.

with the risk of repeating myself 10 zillion times and upsetting my charului friends even more times, what exactly is in this statement that was not in the annan plan which was agreed by the tcs and refused by the gcs.

what ever it is that you boys are smoking is there any spare.

OK, despite what the Cypriot "patriots" would like the plain fact is that the Turkified north is here to stay in one form or another. Even their brave words uttered on Cyprus Forum will not make Turkey loosen its grip. The bottom line is whatever is agreed a handul of disgruntled extremists from one side or the other (probably one or two volunteers here I could nominate) will render the new arrangement unworkable, the poor minority victims will cry "foul" and secede from the new state. So rather than piss about now and haggle over getting back 5% or 10% or 15% why not get 20% back now and tell Turkey it can do what it likes with the rest - after all it only wants a base to protect itself from an attack by Greece.

There would be no problem about settlers or carpetbaggers in the southern state, they would all have to leave, Kurupetos and his mates would make sure of that, and the property issue would be solved because of the fair exchange of territory.
