Traffic Light Advertisers

Postby sneezing7 » Mon Nov 28, 2005 4:33 pm

Just curious:

Am I the only person who does not accept pamphlets at traffic lights? I really get annoyed when people are giving out these papers, and trying to sell me tickets for some charity I have never heard about - nor can they answer my questions, where my money is going.

There was a good editorial in the Cyprus Weekly about this, which has given me an idea. I am now interested to see if the majority of road users accept or decline these advertisments.

Thanks!

You should add "sometimes" in your poll. Sometimes they don't bother me but when they delay the traffic I get very mad!

well... reasons for both. I don't like it, but also, I am aware that they may just hold information to something that actually will benefit me. So I look at it, and in 90% of cases, it isn't something I need or want, but I have the choice. The legalities of it ar something else!!

Adverts I always accept, purely for the fact that the people handing them out get paid very very little money, all based on cartons they shift. As for raffle tickets or anything else that requires me to pay, I always say no thank you in a polite but firm way.

I always accept the adverts just in case but more often than not they are for spectacles and I don’t wear glasses!

I used to always buy the raffle tickets but then realised I had no idea of knowing if it was for a good cause or how I would ever find out if I had won. The last straw was one girl that couldn’t manage to work out how much change she should give me from £10 (that’ll be nine pounds then) and with all the traffic going ballistic behind me because the lights had changed I had to drive off and leave her with my tenner.

Never again.

 almost happened to me but I waited until they gave me the change. Did you know that many of the people that give the tickets take a percentage from the earnings? Before I thought that they are volunteers. Apparently in most cases they are not.

This is the same in the UK now – all the people that are keen to sign you up on standing orders (just four Pounds per week) are all on commission.

Let’s face it, charity is big business now – the larger ones have advertising budgets that run to millions.

Is this a fact??? Are you 100% sure that they are based solely only qty shifted?

I was under the impression that they are paid hourly.

Does anyone know who these people are employed by? Is it the company they are advertising, or another party?

I used to accept anything they gave me, but having seen one nearly cause a bad accident, and then shout at the car driver, I now say NO to everything.

Most times I just take them.
It is something to read while you wait at red lights.
