They had equality from at least the 1980s in Western countries. But it seems to me they got bored without the attention that "normality" brings. So then they started asking for more - using sex like some extremists use manic-religions, demanding more rights than the average citizen, more rights to destroy what the majority had been enjoying for thousands of years.

Oh - reminds me of another minority group. :P

Oh yeh, but the movement for same sex marriage etc and anti discrimination laws is not exactly a demand for more rights now is it? More like a conquest for equality which does not exist in many Western Countries including Cyprus!

Same-sex partnerships ("civil partnerships") do exist in many western countries though, where the same rights and responsibilities are applicable as if the couple were married.

We may not have this formally in Cyprus but no one is stopping anyone from being homosexual or forming legal partnerships where each party in the relationship can assume their responsibility, as if they were married.

Most Western Countries do not allow same sex marriage. Australia, Greece, Cyprus and some US States are examples!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage

Everyone is still free to define their sexuality, but that is NOT the issue.

Same sex marriage will allow for formal recognition which is important to some of them and it also allows the couple to claim various social security benefits should they meet the criteria as well as the ability to adopt.

Some same sex couples would make BETTER parents than some heterosexual couples that have kids.

Very complex issues, and same sex couples certainly have a right to be heard about their wish to form civil unions in the eyes of the law.

There is a same sex civil partnership/union bill pending in Cyprus.

What does His Beastitude think about this? :D

The "extremism" coming from the gay community is the direct consequence of their 'upcomming' 8)

Having slowly gained more and more rights they are now in a position to demand equal rights. I have no desire to marry a man, but there are people who genuinely deserve those rights because although they are same sex couples they function identical to heterosexual couples.

They are equals in every sense, so why should they not have equal rights?

The Bible is a load am man written bollocks there is, designed to further the interests of the Church and its clerics.

There is no way such words would come from "Gods Son" the messenger of God.

I don't know what you mean by "equal in every sense" because that doesn't apply to any other aspect of life. All anyone can ask for is for their individual needs to be met wih equal fairness.

Is this rally really about "equal rights? Because in that case it is superfluous.

Equal rights have been won and now it's about effectively assuming their place in "normal society". It's here where the resistance lies, I'm afraid. Too often "normality" shows its human side, which means diligence, work, social responsibility etc and those things might not appeal to everyone.

So of course, the backlash is that they think there must be something "more" that is missing in their lives ...

BTW - Despite not being religious, I welcome the strong stance the Church of England has taken on keeping "marriage" as a traditional enterprise because heterosexual Christians deserve equal rights too. I hope the Church of Cyprus supports this position.

Nothing will change in Cyprus. People will still be throwing stones at their houses, they will continue going to the police to report it and the police will be laughing at them, and unfortunately the vast majority will be refused a job and earn their living from prostitution.
Contrary to homosexual men Lesbians have almost no problem. Probably because women like to kiss and caress each other publicly anyway, without necessarily been lesbians.
