Anybody know what happened to the cherries in Cyprus this year? I look forward to enjoying this delicious fruit every year but this year I've only seen a few from Greece - at quite a high price.

I don't know about Cyprus prices, usually exorbitant, but here in London you can buy excellent cherries from Lidl for £5.00 per kg.

Cherries incidentally have a very low glycemic value at 22, an excellent fruit for diabetics. Just as a comparison water melon is 76.

I bought cherries at EUR 6 per kilo from my usual vendor at the Limassol pandopolio on Monday. I assumed that they were local - they usually are - and they were excellent. It has been a disastrous winter as far as rainfall goes - the driest winter on record, in fact - so perhaps this has affected the local cherry harvest and they are having to import this year. I was at the pandopolio this morning, actually, and could have asked. I will ask next time I go.

I asked about this at Limassol pandopolio this morning and it seems that the cherries in Cyprus were destroyed by hail this year and so cherries are being imported from Greece instead.
