Major power cut

Postby Tim Drayton » Thu Aug 07, 2014 11:47 am

The electricity went off here in Limassol at about 11:15 this morning for around half an hour. I then noticed that my website and connected e-mail service, which is hosted in Nicosia, were down. I telephoned the hosting company and they said that this was because of the power cut. Was there a nationwide power cut this morning?

There was some problem in Dhekelia power station and that caused the power cut in several areas. There was no power cut where I live.

Thanks for the info. I do not see how a problem at Dhekelia could affect me here in Limassol, although the outage here covered a fairly large area. I think they must have been separate incidents.

Half way up/down the mountains approximately half the village lost its electrical supply for around twenty minutes this morning, first time this summer and pretty good considering all the air conditioning units that are banging away. Lovely storm yesterday with about an hours worth of hail stones and heavy rain.

Given that a few years ago unscheduled power cuts were unheard of in Cyprus, in my view it is not good at all.

A lot depends on your circumstances. If, like me, you have a heavy workload in front of you and you need a computer to work with, then for the power to suddenly go off when you are deep in concentration and trying to put in a 9-10 hour day of solid work is a great nuisance.

Cyprus used to give me a lot of competitive advantages as a place to work from and, sadly, they have all either vanished or are vanishing - a reliable uninterrupted electricity supply being one of them.

It seems that about one-third of consumers lost their power supply this morning:

So there was a powercut from roughly 11 am to 12pm. One hour.

By 12pm on Thursday, most of the grid was functioning normally with only 10MW shortage from the morning’s output.

Good grief. The Cyprus Mail commentators must be having a field day.
