Basic living costs on moving to Cyprus

Postby Flying Horse » Tue Nov 04, 2014 11:07 am

I wish to draw on your experience and knowledge of all things Cyprus for a family moving from the UK.
Firstly, I'd like to know if any of you can give me the direction of a shipping removals company to transport a families worldly goods.

I'd then like to know what the basic(average) monthly outgoings such as rental of a 3 bed villa, Particularly in Paphos would be. Also such things as education cost, health care, electricity bills, taxes, how to go about acquiring work permits, yellow slips?

Everything and anything I need to know about. It doesn't need to be exact, but something that can be worked on for affordability etc.

Many thanks in advance.

As you are asking about work permits you should be looking for jobs before bothering about anything else!

Looking for jobs is already in hand ;)
I'm just wanting general pointers of the things which need to be done, and the cost involved to sort them out.

If you are an EU citizen, then it is pretty straightforward. Go to the immigration department and they will give you a list of the documents you need to collect (you should be able to get that from the reception straight away). You will then spend some time at various government offices registering and collecting the right bits of paper and return to make your application. I would allow a week for this. Here in Limassol, there are very long waits at the immigration department and you may find you spend the best part of the morning until you are seen. The practice now seems to be that you get a yellow slip for five years first time and a permanent one when you apply five years later.

I would say that the cost of most things is equal to /slightly more expensive than the equivalents in the UK.

Thankyou Tim.

We had found on our last trip that the cost of groceries and petrol for instance was equivalent or slightly higher. There was differing opinions on Cyprus being an expensive place to live, but, the only thing we could see was perhaps clothing was higher.
Do you feel such things as utilities bills for instance, is on that par too? Would exporting a vehicle be more costly in the long run, or would selling it in the UK and buying another in Cyprus be better?

Cyprus is a lot cheaper than the UK, Australia, etc, but when you live and work there it might be a whole different ball game altogether as you probably would have a greatly reduced buying parity to those countries.

Tax, utilities, power and telecommunications are much cheaper. In my experience, groceries are cheaper. Electronics, cars and technology are dearer in Cyprus. Fuel is dearer.Furniture is dearer. It's probably a mixed bag but you need to consider the average Cypriot salary or wage and work out whether your living is sustainable in your new reality.

It's not all a bed of roses so make sure you have an easy exit strategy. Don't go selling your UK home. Don't put yourself in a difficult corner.

Jobs are difficult too in the current environment but if you're flexible and willing then you shouldn't have too much difficulty.

You don't live here mate, it is difficult finding a job, any job, at the moment. Unless you have sought after skills that are not readily available in Cyprus, you could be looking for a long time.

Yes I know that CBBB! Unemoyment is 18%.

It is really difficult but I always felt that if you are willing to be flexible and do some courses and go for a bit of a career change in an area that is in demand, then maybe you can swing it.

It really all depends on how badly you really want to move to Cyprus in my opinion.

FH - good (possible) move. :)

In my opinion having lived on and off in both places, I think Cyprus is a haven for branching out into a business. The potential for something novel is still there. At least, that's what I'm hoping to put into practice over the coming couple of years. If you are going with looking for a job, you have a few months before you have to dot all the i's and cross the t's for all the paperwork, unlike non-EU members.

Unhelpfully, Cyprus can be both cheap and extremely expensive. Ditch things like Air Cons that use up electricity and aim for renting/buying something with a large garden to grow as much of your own as possible. And, you know, chickens for eggs and so on and you'll be better off than in the UK. Council tax and water rates are also cheaper in Cyprus.

I hope your dream comes true - your boys will benefit so much. :)
