More ancients found in Cyprus

Postby Sotos » Wed Dec 07, 2005 12:10 pm

EXCAVATIONS at the Lower City of Amathus brought to the surface an inscription on a limestone slab that refers to Emperor Theodosius, pottery, Byzantine and Roman coins, wall painting fragments, inscribed handles of Rhodian amphoras, terracottas and a copper bell, as well as a large amount of stone tools.

The findings were uncovered during the fourteenth season of the new series of excavations in the area conducted by the Department of Antiquities of the Ministry of Communications and Works, which lasted six weeks and were directed by the Director of the Department of Antiquities Dr Pavlos Flourentzos, who was assisted by Kyriacos Kapitanis and Demos Theodorou, both members of the technical staff of the Department of Antiquities.

According to an official press release, since the goal of unifying the area of the ancient Agora with that of the Administrative Building had been accomplished in the past, this year's primary aim was the excavation of the floors within the areas of various building complexes.

There were more interesting results from the excavation of the floors in rooms of the Administrative Building that were located at a higher level. Rooms 18 and 19 were revealed as having been in use as a metalworking workshop during the 4th cent. BC, as well as during the Early Byzantine period. An iron anvil was discovered as well as moulds and other copper objects; room no. 19 was paved.

''The movable finds from this year's excavation period were plentiful with a lot of pottery, Byzantine and Roman coins, wall painting fragments, inscribed handles of Rhodian amphoras, terracottas and a copper bell, as well as a large amount of stone tools. Worthy of mention is an inscription on a limestone slab that refers to Emperor Theodosius,'' the press release notes.

Everywhere that you dig you find ancients! What is left now is to find the lost Atlantis here :D

it depends what theory u believe in there are many theories about where atlantis is or if its only a made up story of a imaginative philosopher you can go and check this web site if you like: http://www.activemind.com/Mysterious/Topics/Atlantis/Image
Thera & The Minoan Civilization
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are some compelling similarites between the destruction of Thera and the destruction of Atlantis.....

For
The island of Thera, a volcanic island, was destroyed around 1500 BC by an explosion which caused more than half of the island to sink into the sea.
Artifacts found on the island indicate a sophisticated culture, probably part of the Minoan Civilization.
There is evidence pointing to trade between the Minoans and Egyptians. The Egyptians would certainly have been aware of the destruction or at least the tremedous damage done to one of their trading partners.
We'll examine this possibility in more detail in upcoming issues of Enigma.
Against
Proponents of this theory claim that Plato's date of 9000 years ago should really have been 900 years ago: somewhere along the line either Solon or Plato made a mistake. If the story was 900 years ago it would place Atlantis in the time frame of the Minoan civilization on Crete and Thera. Conveniently overlooked in this thinking is that in Timaeus the priest tells Solon that ancient Athens and Atlantis preceeded Egypt by a thousand years. Egypt however existed and was known to have existed since long before 1500 BC, the time of Crete and Thera. The times just don't add up unless you assume the Egyptian priest was ignorant of his own recorded history.

it is even not surprising to come across ceramic fragments anywhere you go mostly dated to roman or byzantine times as surface finds, this is just very typical for this country .

Actually its not that Crete is at the position of Cyprus, but it is that Cyprus is not in the map! I saw several other maps that do not show Cyprus at all.

New claim on location of Atlantis
By Tabitha Morgan
BBC News, Cyprus

Sonar scanning revealed what are said to be man-made structures
American researchers claim to have found convincing evidence that locates the site of the lost kingdom of Atlantis off the coast of Cyprus.
The team spent six days scanning the Mediterranean sea bed between Cyprus and Syria using sonar technology.

They believe they found evidence of massive, manmade structures beneath the ocean floor, including two straight, 2-km (1.25 mile) long walls on a hill.

They say their discoveries match accounts of the city written by Plato.

'Greatest coincidence'

Team leader Robert Sarmast said the walls appear to be sited on a flat-topped hill where the temples of Atlantis once stood.

Myth or reality? It is said to be a place of beauty and wealth
He intends to use the sonar data to make a three-dimensional computer image of the site, 1.5km below sea level, before returning for further research.

"The hill, as a whole, basically looks like a walled, hillside territory and this hillside territory matches Plato's description of the Acropolis hill with perfect precision," he said.

"Even the dimensions are exactly perfect, so if all these things are coincidental, I mean, we have the world's greatest coincidence going on."

However, Mr Sarmast and his team are not alone in believing they have found the lost city of Atlantis.

Sonar technology was used to survey the sea bed off Cyprus
Other researchers have placed it off the coast of Spain, Cuba and the south west of England, as well as under the South China Sea.

The story of Atlantis, a fabled utopia destroyed in ancient times, has captured the imagination of scholars ever since it was first described by the philosopher Plato.

Writing more than 2,000 years ago, he depicted a land of fabulous wealth, advanced civilisation and natural beauty.
