Put it this way GiG.
Italy's global impact and contribution on the planet is mindblowing.

Gucci, Versace, Pirelli, Ferrari, lamborghini, Prada, Armani, Martini, BVLGARI, Barilla, Chico, United Colours of Benetton, Diesel, Nutella, Indesit, Maserati, Alpha Romeo, Fiat, Lancia, Ferrero, Valentino, Cinzano, Illy, De'Longhi, Aprilia, Fila, Agip, Peroni, Iveco, Ducati..... etc etc.

The Italians are industry MACHINES.

:? I’m exactly the opposite; love most things Italian including the place, their football, cars, motorbikes, films, music, fashion… but not their cuisine. Pasta is boring…

I agree ... but I also like pasta ;)

Exactly what Cyprus needed to boost it's economy. Now it's OK to give back the fat lump sums at retirement for all public "workers" along with all other perks.

Sorry, Cap but the fact they mass produce masses of useless material goods means nothing to me. They don't even make pasta as tasty as the Greeks. Their olive oil is like cooking oil. Their cheeses are nothing compared to the best of ours.

They've just monopolised the western countries into thinking they are cool "southern Mediterranean" types and all they've done for thousands of years is modify Greek things. They are not innovators. They are the European equivalent of the Japanese. They copy and promote.

Suprficial tat!

And their country's landscape cannot hold a candle to Greece. Their roads are pox-marked remnants from the second world war - oh yeah - and let's not forget their stupid decisions during THAT time!

An embarrassment - shame they have a few of our Greek genes to boast their way out of savagery. :P

You've completely lost your mind!

This is the country of Ferrari and Lamborghini.

And their cuisine Jedi ine too. Everything about it, right down to their Olive Oil, Cheeses and Wine. But their innovation comes from their industrial prowess. They are a significant global power.

Italy is a great country. Economically, they are almost in crisis but they will be fine in a few years time. It's a country I am going to get to know a lot more in the future.

Christmas was great this year. I did not spend it with any Greeks (always a plus) but my Italian Best Mate who is absolutely the best! :D

The Japanese are another powerhouse. Very much like Ze Germans in innovation.

And the elite are turning their backs on the old hacks ...

But while Italy grew by making scooters, cars and handbags, the mafias carved out their own routes to wealth: tobacco smuggling, construction, kidnapping and narcotics.

By the 1980s, Southern Italy was on the edge of becoming a narco-state. :P The scene was set for a titanic struggle against mafiosi who could no longer tolerate any obstacle to their ambitions.

Italy today still lives in the aftermath of that season of savagery. The world of the mafias has changed for good. The once great camorra clans have fragmented into feuding factions. The mighty Cosa Nostra is a shell of its former self.

But the mafias are far from dead. The long shadow of mafia history still hangs over a nation wracked by debt, political paralysis, and corruption. :P And just when Italy thought it had finally contained the mafia threat, it is now discovering that it harbours the most global criminal network of them all.

You're not saying anything about the Russian Mafia that also has a foothold in Cyprus.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_mafia

The difference is that Italy has contributed a great deal more innovation than Russia has when it comes to industries non related to Defence. Sure I concede that the Russians have excelled in that sector but Italy is pretty much one of those countries at the pinnacle of ingenuity and innovation.

Greece has a population that is one fifth of Italy's. If we had 20% of Italy's industrial might, and started producing high quality technologies and products like they do, then Greece would be doing ok as a nation today. Sadly, we are insignificant for some reason.

There is certainly something wrong which I can't work out. Italy punches above its weight. Greece is like bee's dick shooting blanks!

Even the best Greek academics are poached by US, Australia and Canada. There is a bloody huge brain drain.
