Cyprus will be affected from the nuclear plant which is being built in Mersin Akkuyu said the final declaration of the “Nuclear Plants and Their Effects” conference which took place last month in Nicosia.

In the declaration it is stated that a possible accident at the plant would cause environmental damage in Cyprus, however it was added that even the routine operations of the plant would cause environmental and health hazards in Cyprus.

According to the declaration which cites a study conducted by the Turkish Chamber of Architects and Engineers (TMMOB) assessing Akkuyu’s risks, Cyprus is listed as the first place to be effected by negative effects of the routine operations of the plant. In the report of the study it is also said that Cyprus would be the first place to be affected by radiation in case of an accident.

It was also reported that during the conference Akkuyu’s probably risks, modelling works, Environmental Impact Assessment Report (ÇED) process, its effects on public health, and history of anti-nuclear struggle in Turkey and in the world were also discussed.

The thing is it's probably the safest and cleanest energy source on the planet.

The only thing I would worry about is major earthquakes and Turkey is renowned for them so they better build this thing to withstand the worst kind of quakes known to man otherwise that might be a problem.

you are cluless as per usual. we still don't know how we are going to dispose of the waste materials this system generates and you say it is the cleanest way. sure it does not produce co2 but at least co2 can be taken up by the plants but with nuclear waste we are just building dangers for future generations never mind any accidents or earthquakes.

Thorium, and Molten Salt Technology, are nuclear, and safe.

is that meant to be a joke? are you suggesting that it can be used to produce ebergy with no danger? you must be joking rw.

Thorium as a nuclear fuel

Thorium (Th-232) is not itself fissile and so is not directly usable in a thermal neutron reactor. However, it is ‘fertile’ and upon absorbing a neutron will transmute to uranium-233 (U-233)a, which is an excellent fissile fuel materialb. In this regard it is similar to uranium-238 (which transmutes to plutonium-239)

you still think it is ok?

yes, i think it is part of the future. In fact, there is no stopping it. Certainly, it is far safer than the reactor systems we have today.

..."dangerous" is no reason for ignoring nuclear fission, or fusion, research.

Building a nuclear reactor, like this, in an earthquake zone, should not be ignored either. It goes along with the hydro electric dams that are filling right now, burying what was living communities of ten thousand years. This is Erdogan's world, the way he sees it; we see.
