Could Turkish become an official language of EU?

The government is looking into applying to make Turkish, which is one of the island’s two official languages along with Greek, an official language of the European Union, reports said on Tuesday.

Turkish Cypriot newspaper Havadis said President Nicos Anastasiades has instructed bureaucrats to look into the procedure that has to be followed for an application to be filed to the EU.

The paper said Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci has been informed by Anastasides of his intention.

The move, according to Havadis, is considered a good will gesture that Anastasiades thinks would positively contribute to efforts to reunify the island.
The paper said that despite Turkey’s efforts in the past years, the issue was not put on the agenda citing the high cost.
