The National Statistical Service of Greece (Ελληνική Στατιστική Αρχή) has announced this morning its proposition to legalize certain illegal sectors of the economy, such as drugs and prostitution, to help increase the country’s revenues and eventually, repay its debt.

A 2013 study by the Hellenic Statistical Authority revealed that illegal activities in Greece, such as drug trafficking and prostitution, generated over €26.2 billion, revenues that could dramatically change Greece’s economic situation, believes Greece’s finance minister.

“Radical times call for radical actions” explains Euclid Tsakalotos, Greece’s recently appointed finance minister. “If Holland and Portugal do it, why not us?” he told parliament leaders, yesterday.

Legalizing drugs wouldn't work that well for Greece. The problem is not that there are not enough taxes, the problem is collecting them. I doubt many addicts would be very willing to pay taxes on their drugs if they can get them tax free. And prostitution is apparently already legal in Greece: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitution_in_Europe

Even more interesting is that in Turkey brothels are legal and they are all government owned! Pimping not allowed in Turkey though. Turkish government doesn't want any competition!

if it is not it should be. the germans and the dutch have legalised prostitution and it works there. the dutch legalised drugs too in certain parts of the country and it works. it helps the users because it is healthier for all concerned and it helps the tax collectors. they will get more taxes from that then ordinary folk.

there was an experiment done in one part of glasgow where methadone was available with clean needles for free in one clinic. the only condition was that the users had to sign up to classes to be educated about drugs. they found that the crime rate there dropped by 95%. so there public get a piece of mind too.

One way to foil tax evaders in Greece is the officialisation via a tax stamp, an antiquated system used in the past in other countries. So when you get any legal documentation done it bears stamps known as "dikigorosima", the building permit has "mihanosima", and the list goes on.

Presumably a consumation with a paid lady would be taxed via "poutanosimo"? Drug deals via "mastourosimo"?

Euclid went to Eaton and Oxford and all that learning led to the invention of poutanosima, e re ti pathame!

Maybe it would be more helpful to cut down the methadone treatment waiting list from two years (as per the OKANA anti drug organisation) to two days. Just a thought.
