Introduction

Postby jclo69 » Tue Dec 27, 2005 7:05 pm

Just a short introduction before we arrive on the island.

My husband, Allen and our son, Jalen will be relocating from the Big Apple to Nicosia at the beginning of February 2006. Our assignment should be for about two years.

If anyone can offer good advice on anything at all, it would be appreciated.

Thanks much and Happy New Year everyone.

-Joanna

Yes, from New York city. I was born and raised here and I've had enough of the fast-paced life. Its too money driven and you tend to lose scope of what is really important in life - like family.

Mikros - many thanks for the warm welcome...I just had a few questions about finding a decent/reasonably priced apartment in Nicosia. I internet seems very limited as far as apartments in Nicosia are concerned - all of the flats seem to be located some place on the coast. What is the average price for a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom apartment?

Also, I don't think any city can really compare to NYC. The cost of living is way too high. Our apartment alone costs $1600 USD per month plus utilities. Its crazy. If your not making $80K a year, its very hard to live.

Not a prob at all. Ok, a 2 bedroom apartment in the central Nicosia start from about 260CYP up (about 520USD), where are 3 bedroom ones start from about 300-350CYP of course it all depends on the appartment itself, you need a lot of gambling for this! Haven't been to NYC to be honest yet, but I'm been to London and Frankfurt as well as Stockholm quite a few times (I even stayed in Stockholm for a few months). For the price you pay in NYC you get a really posh 3 bedroom apprtment or even a house.

First off, welcome to the forums Joanna. Hope you find it informative and helpful.

Secondly, I'm assuming that is a picture of yourself and your husband. It is a very nice photo :)

And finally, regarding internet, the majority of Nicosia has access to internet and broadband internet. Go to a CYTA (Cyprus Telecommunication Authority) shop and they will be able to assist you with any questions you may have.

Mikros. Many people have mixed feelings about NYC - some love it and never want to leave and others basically enjoy the short visit. The closest I've ever been to London was at Heathrow airport!!! The same goes for Frankfurt. My husband grew up in Germany and lived there until he was about 8 years old. I haven't really travelled much in Europe but plan on doing so since we're going to be in the vicinity. I lived in Lebanon for about a year back in 2000.

As for housing, I really don't want to pay so much for an apartment. If I can find something good for around 400 CYP - that would be perfect. I checked out buysellcyprus.com but many of the flats listed do not accept doggys and we'll be bringing our pooch. See attached pic.

Welcome to the forum

Don't you think moving to Vermont will be less expensive LOL

I find cost of living in Cyprus to be higher than the USA including NYC. Maybe food is a bit less but all the rest is higher. Especially appliances, electronics and gasoline.

Been to NYC a few times. Great place to visit. I would not live there though.

Keep in mind that most of the time we talk dollars and they talk pounds. Which means cost is double in Cyprus.

I bought a digital camera for my niece and it cost here 400 dollars and the same one there was over 500 pounds.

Keep in mind that power is 220v there and you turn the light off to turn in on, plus the hot water is reversed from the US. Not to mention you drive on the other side of the road. Takes me sometime to get used to driving there even though I was born and learned to drive on the left side of the road. BE really careful.

Just thought you might like to know.

Leonidas - many thanks for the advice. Vermont??? Yikes, I don't think I would ever want to live there. I'm not a big fan of cold weather.

I really doubt if the cost of living can be more in Cyprus than in the states - at least not compared to NY. Other parts of the country, say Georgia, the cost of living is more balanced. But as far as NY is concerned, the cost of living is way too high. I was born and raised in NY and I've seen the cost of living sky rocket. My boss' apartment was $4000 per month and that was for a 2 bedroom flat. My husband and I are both in the 6-figure range but the cost of living here is still too high. If we moved to Cyprus, we would still make the same salary + a housing allowance, so our cost of living would be better for us.

Don't you think?
